Blanche Lincoln to Bear the Brunt of Progressive Anger

On Meet the Press Take Two, Markos Moulitsas of Daily Kos says Arkansas Senator Blanche Lincoln, viewed as a democrat obstructionist, will bear the brunt of liberal anger because she's up for election in 2010. On criticizing Obama, the left has noticeably dulled their knives:

David Plouffe on Meet the Press Nov. 1

Update Nov. 1: Watch video of Plouffe on MTP here

Plouffe's new book. I'll always have fond memories of the 2008 campaign. It was my foray into politics, government and history. Plouffe hand-delivered a copy of his new book to Obama aboard Air Force One:
This Sunday on “Meet the Press,” David Gregory will interview Obama campaign David Plouffe regarding his new book, “The Audacity to Win: The Inside Story and Lessons of Barack Obama’s Historic Victory.” Time magazine has some excerpts from Plouffe’s book. On weighing Hillary as Obama’s VP: “Barack continued to be intrigued by Hillary. ‘I still think Hillary has a lot of what I am looking for in a VP,’ he said to us ‘... I think Bill may be too big a complication. If I picked her, my concern is that there would be more than two of us in the relationship.’ Neither Ax nor I were fans of the Hillary option.” And on Palin: “I also thought it was a downright bizarre, ill-considered and deeply puzzling choice ... [Obama] said, “... when voters step back and analyze how he made this decision, I think he’s going to be in big trouble. You just can’t wing something like this — it’s too important.” First Read

Cornyn Unwittingly Makes the Case for Obama's Rethinking of Afghanistan

If Obama said we should be kind to our neighbor, republicans would say... now wait a minute, that's probably not a good idea.

On Meet the Press Jon Cornyn ends up making the case for why Obama is reconsidering strategy in Afghanistan. David Gregory asks him pointedly: Did Cheney provide enough troops to win in Afghanistan? Then Cornyn goes on to say it's not just troops, it's strategy. Bingo. Here's the clip:

Obama is Forcing Accountability on Afghanistan

Bob Woodward said something interesting on Meet the Press this morning. He said the deliberate Afghanistan strategy meetings are forcing everyone to dig in, which will have the effect of accountability.
On the Nobel Peace Prize, Lindsey Graham says Obama will earn it if he sends more troops to Afghanistan. Meanwhile, democrats are saying he'll earn it if he pulls troops out of Afghanistan.
It's pretty clear that the Peace Prize has become just another obstacle thrown in Obama's way.
It's also pretty clear that no one knows what they're talking about when it comes to Afghanistan. Everyone just has an opinion. No one seems to know the hearts and minds of the Afghanistan people. No one knows what's the best path for Afghanistan.

Susan Rice on Meet the Press Oct. 4

Why is Olympic Loss All About US?

Americans sure are egotistical. Chicago got knocked out of in first round and surely it has to be about nasty politics? It has to be that Obama failed? Obama surely had to have gotten bad advice to go and make a personal appeal for the Olympics?
Why can't it be that Rio just had a better pitch and that the IOC decided that Rio was the best place to hold the Olympics? This will be the first Olympics in South America. That's pretty special.
Sometimes it isn't about the U.S.

Obama's Problem in Health Care: The Democrats

Interesting debates on the Sunday shows. Someone needs to invent a Lying Hat that will light up when politicians are exaggerating, distorting and outright lying. On Meet the Press, Orrin Hatch was lying through his teeth, exaggerating at best, and for the most part, David Gregory let him get away with it.

The public option debate is way out of control. It's such a simple concept that has been mangled by the right.

On Meet the Press, I think Joe Scarborough nailed the root of Obama's health care problem -- Obama doesn't have all the democrats on board. That's because the democratic party is a larger party, more reflective of America, while the republican party is, as Paul Krugman called them, the "rump." I can't think of a better word.

So now Obama has this bigger divide among democrats to contend with, the liberals on one end and the blue dogs on the other. Liberals, especially, have bailed on Obama. They act as though they own Obama. They only have his back if they get what they want. Tavis Smiley says Obama is backtracking on the public option. I don't think so at all. The media made a big to-do over it last Sunday and liberals got scared. Liberals are scared like the Rump (republicans) is scared. The entire debate of healthcare reform was getting bogged down by the public option because the Rump was able to persuade enough people that the public option was a government takeover.

In the end, the bill will have a public option because it is a small, important sliver of reform. Obama's intention has always been to insure those who can't afford insurance.

I'm glad Obama is on vacation because healthcare reform turned into a side show.

Another side note, Tavis Smiley was dead on about the hate at the Obama rallies. As a society, we can't accept strapping a gun to your leg and then going to a presidential town hall as anger. It's not anger. It's irrational hate. These cockroaches have been drawn out of the woodwork. Scarborough also said that it's wrong and it makes the job of the Secret Service tougher. Scarborough said that most of the angry people have just taken up sides, and they don't even know what they're talking about. They couldn't even define public option.

Daschle, Armey, Coburn and Maddow on Meet the Press Aug. 16

Town halls don't hurt the health care debate. Misinformation does, says Tom Daschle.
David Gregory asks the panel about the escalation of violence at town halls. He points out that Timothy McVeigh had the same thing written on his shirt the day he bombed the Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City in 1995 as the man with the gun strapped to his leg at Obama's town hall in New Hampshire.
Tom Coburn says this debate isn't about healthcare. It's about fear of government. That makes sense. My question is why now? Why is everyone suddenly fearing government? I'd say it's driven by hatred and fear of Obama from our fringes. Dick Armey, of course, who is on the fringes, believes that Obama has earned the violent reaction in the the 7 or so months Obama's been in office, which is irrational and proves there is something deeper here.
Rachel Maddow doesn't let Armey get away with his lies.

David Gregory sits down with Rachel after the show:

Bloomberg and Booker Talk Stimulus, Guns, Healthcare on Meet the Press

The show starts off with Jim Jones who talks about Bill Clinton's successful mission, overshadowed by the fringe and their problems with health care and underlying problems with a changing society. On the Chris Matthews Show this morning, the roundtable said a lot of the fringe that we're seeing in the media, thanks to the Internet, ugh, are feeling insecure and worried about the economy. But moreover, they're worried about life as they know it passing them by as the country becomes more diverse and their white world crumbles around them. Glenn Beck calls it "white culture." They're afraid that minorities are taking over.
The roundtable also concluded that the fringe will continue to run the dwindling GOP. Conservative columnist Kathleen Parker says Sarah Palin is making a run for the presidency and the GOP is very afraid. I'll always blame John McCain for propping up an inadequate person for such a big and important job. It will be a sad, sad day if Palin is the republican choice for president in 2012. Although it would be kind of fun to watch her.
On the Meet the Press roundtable at the end of this clip, David Brooks calls Sarah Palin's recent remarks about Obama's "death panel" nuts. He also says Limbaugh's nazi remarks are insane.

Larry Summers on Meet the Press Aug. 2

Larry Summers does a good job of explaining why criticism against the stimulus is wrong. I'm sure the republicans will continue to call it a big flop, because that's what they do, but at least Larry Summers did his job in making clear the purpose of the stimulus. I think this is complicated stuff for most Americans--some of whom are barely paying attention--to understand. That's why we see the poll numbers on health care drop--they figure if the stimulus isn't working, how is health reform going to work? If they keep hearing the republican message above all (they're so good playing politics), they'll be swayed, unless the democrats can come with a message that's easier to chew on:

Obama Being Widely Underestimated - Again

Health care reform is coming.
It will be better than the House bill. It will have a public insurance option to rival private insurers. Sorry Mitch.
McConnell is so extreme, he opposes Sonia Sotomayor.
The bill might come later than August, especially if moderate republicans, such as Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins are truly on board, which they seem to be.
Obama is challenged by the left, who really want health care to be run by the government and the right, who don't want reform at all.
Kathleen Sebelius says reform (there are about five different plans) is still a work in progress. They are going after fraud and abuse and looking for ways to cut costs, she said. That's contrary to what the republicans have been saying. Sebelius says it will be paid for and it won't add to the deficit.
The media is still playing health care reform as a political football, which disturbs me.
And it's all on this week's Meet the Press:

Turning the Economy in Four Months isn't Possible

At about the 27 minute mark, Sen. Chuck Shumer says Obama has a long-term strategy on the economy. Exactly. But republicans know that the nation that wants quick relief--NOW--so they are pouncing. But what are their solutions?
Obama can't turn around and transition an economy in four months. It's not reasonable. Read Obama's op-ed in today's Washington Post here.
Americans are becoming more sensible. They are saving money and downsizing their lives, which means fewer purchases and smaller living, which in turn means higher unemployment (fewer people are buying things so companies are laying off workers), as the economy finds a balance. At the same time, a huge undertaking is underway to transition the economy from one that depends on consumer buying to one that's more dependent on invention, exports and green jobs.

From Obama's op-ed in the WP:
Now is the time to build a firmer, stronger foundation for growth that not only will withstand future economic storms but that helps us thrive and compete in a global economy. To build that foundation, we must lower the health-care costs that are driving us into debt, create the jobs of the future within our borders, give our workers the skills and training they need to compete for those jobs, and make the tough choices necessary to bring down our deficit in the long run.

A Glimpse at the New Economy Post Recession

It will be much saner. Fingers crossed. The future looks bright, except for California, which is suffering from bigger woes, and could take much longer to turn itself around. Google's CEO Eric Schmidt talks about California's unique troubles:

Entire Meet the Press show:

Xerox CEO Says GM Bankruptcy Only Path

GM is expected to file for bankruptcy on Monday.
On Meet the Press, Anne Mulcahy, CEO of Xerox, says GM has no other path but bankruptcy.
That's because the auto industry destroyed itself. It's interesting that people are playing it as if Obama destroyed the auto industry. These weren't companies just teetering on bankruptcy. They were companies teetering on oblivion. They ran an entire U.S. industry into the ground with bad management that wasn't able to work effectively with organized labor. The Obama administration is working on saving an industry, not a couple of companies.

Sessions and Leahy Debate Sotomayor on Meet the Press

Republicans just don't get it.
And Rush Limbaugh is ruining politics, or rather the media is ruining politics by giving him a platform. I guess maybe it's republicans who are ruining politics choosing Rush as their guy. Who shares his views? Very very few. Many people just listen to him because they love to hate him. I'm tired of seeing clips of Limbaugh. His opinion is worthless.
Republicans really lost this battle. Sotomayor has enough votes to be confirmed. They should've just taken the higher road. Calling Sotomayor a racist is just sickening to me.
Jeff Sessions agrees with Rush. He just wouldn't use the word "racist." Watch that in the first clip. David Gregory didn't catch what Sessions meant. He kept asking the question over and over.
Sessions doesn't get what empathy means. That word really threw everyone for a loop. It simply means someone other than a white guy will be making important decisions on behalf of the nation. In order to achieve justice and fairness, you need to have diverse people representing. This "justice is blind" stuff is crap. We all know justice isn't blind. Blind justice is THE IDEAL but until we're ALL EQUAL, justice can't be equal. Empathy is an advantage on the court, not a negative, because only empathy aspires to fairness. I think Obama realizes that most Americans get it.
