TP: Today, the candidates debated the future of the Party at the National Press Club and all agreed that the GOP needs to bring in more minorities. But in an interview with ThinkProgress after the debate, Steele said that Saltsman is detracting from this effort. Who's in the running to head the republican national committee:

The Hill: South Carolina GOP chief Katon Dawson, Former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, Michigan Republican Party chairman Saul Anuzis and current chairman Robert M. "Mike" Duncan all have the backing of a majority of delegates from three states, the threshold for appearing on the ballot.

Two other candidates have yet to release enough names to guarantee a spot on the ballot. Former Maryland Lieutenant Gov. Michael Steele and former Tennessee GOP party chairman Chip Saltsman, who was criticized by Duncan and Anuzis for circulating a CD to RNC members that included the parody song "Barack the Magic Negro," are also running for the position.

Tennessee Newspaper: State Needs to Move Past 1959

Much of the bigotry that we've seen throughout the election, and still from the Chipper, distributing racist songs to his fellow republicans, has come from the Tennessee republican party. But take a look at the comments at the end of the story and you'll see, Tennessee still has a long way to go, or at least the readers of the newspaper do.

During the presidential campaign, the state Republican party released a press statement called "Anti-Semites for Obama." It used Barack Obama's middle name of Hussein and described a photo of him wearing traditional Kenyan clothing as "Muslim attire." The party also produced a video criticizing remarks made by Michelle Obama that brought Barack Obama to a spirited defense of his wife.

Both incidents received negative publicity nationwide and made Tennessee look like a haven for backwoods bigots.

Now, former Tennessee GOP chairman Chip Saltsman, who aspires to the post of Republican National Committee chairman, has sent a Christmas message to top Republicans. Included was a CD with the song, "Barack the Magic Negro."

The paper's editorial team's conclusion is definitely not heeded by many of its readers:

We agree with Gingrich. Chip Saltsman should not hold a position of prominence in the GOP. If the Republicans have any hopes of expanding their base and remaining a true national party, they must be inclusive and not resemble an all-white men's club that engages in bathroom humor.

Moreover, the Tennessee branch of the Republican Party would do well to undergo introspection of its own. Why, for example, did it give official blessing to attacks on Obama that were of the variety usually found in anonymous e-mail spam?

Tomorrow, we turn the page on a new year — 2009. When it comes to race and politics, some in Tennessee need to stop acting as if it's still 1959.

Duncan Slams Saltsman Over Obama Song

Here's the biggest problem that the republicans have: Ever since Bush, the fringy Palinesque types crept in and took over the republican party.

Now the normal republicans are trying to figure out how to get their party back in order. Good luck with that! They don't seem to know who is who and what they want to be when they grow up. They talk a lot about inclusion, but it appears to be lip service. At the same time, it seems Americans are shunning party politics.

To keep us entertained, the republicans are vying to head the RNC, and behaving as if they need a babysitter and some sense.

Mike Duncan, head of the of the RNC, and campaigning to continue to chair the RNC, slammed Chip Saltsman, the immature little boy, also running for RNC chair, who is passing out a CD that contains a highly offensive song about Obama. Read about that here. Saltsman is Mike Huckabee's former campaign manager.

Duncan isn't enlightened, though. I heard him in an interview on NPR and he was clueless about how to move the republican party forward. I'd guess his slamming of Saltsman's behavior is merely politics. One only needs to look at the crappy commercials that the RNC put out during the election and how they used race to exploit people.

Politico: Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan issued a statement Saturday distancing the party’s leadership from one of the GOP’s best-known operatives, Chip Saltsman, who distributed a CD containing “Barack the Magic Negro” as part of his campaign to be elected chairman of the Republican National Committee next month.

Duncan, who has served the campaigns of five presidents dating back to Richard Nixon, is seeking reelection as the party’s 60th chairman in a hotly contested race that includes Saltsman and several other viable candidates.

Saltsman, 40, was former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee’s campaign manager during the Republican presidential primaries.

Saltsman sent Republican National Committee members, who will choose the next chairman, a CD by conservative political satirist Paul Shanklin, “We HATE the USA.” It contains the controversial track, which was popular on conservative radio. Shanklin’s Web site promises “absolutely the best parodies in talk radio.”

Duncan's statement, in full: "The 2008 election was a wake-up call for Republicans to reach out and bring more people into our party. I am shocked and appalled that anyone would think this is appropriate as it clearly does not move us in the right direction."

Saltsman’s candidacy for national party chair is endorsed by Huckabee and fellow Tennessean Bill Frist, the former Senate majority leader.

Saltsman defended his song selection to The Hill’s Reid Wilson, who first reported the gift.

CNN adds a twist: Puff is mad too.

Also Saturday, Peter Yarrow, who co-wrote "Puff the Magic Dragon," called Saltsman's decision to distribute the parody tune "offensive," and "shocking and saddening in the extreme."

"It is almost unimaginable to me," Yarrow wrote in a statement sent to CNN, that Saltsman "would seriously be considered for the top post of the Republican National Committee. Puff, himself, if asked, would certainly agree."

Yarrow, a member of the 1960s folk group Peter, Paul and Mary, was a contributor to Obama's presidential campaign

Extremists Suffer Serious Obama Denial

Extremists, who give conservatives a bad name, just can't face up to an Obama presidency. It's deep-rooted racism. No doubt about it, at least according to me.

Mike Huckabee's former campaign manager Chip Saltsman distributed, for Christmas, a Rush Limbaugh favorite -- Barack the Magic Negro. Limbaugh still can't get over the fact that Obama is black. 

Saltsman (here's his email: inbox@chipsaltsman.com) is actually a candidate to chair the RNC. If this is the state of the RNC, they'll need 8 years, at least, to grow up. 

TPM: If one of the Republican Party's challenges is how to effectively oppose the first black president without coming off as racist, one of the candidates for RNC chair is hardly off to a good start -- he is now distributing a CD that includes a racially-charged song called "Barack, The Magic Negro."

Sean Hannity is leading a "resistance" to the Obama administration: 

Radimist: Since the election, Hannity has described his radio show as the outpost of "the conservative underground," as if a show that's legally on over 500 stations could be underground in any real sense of that word. There is little doubt that there are many conservatives who think America will become a radical country under the Democrats and last night I heard on Mike Gallagher's show of a group that is trying to organize these people - Grassfire.

At the Grassfire web site, you get an idea of the immaturity at work here. What's not good is this kind of thing inspires lunatics to violence. If you head to freerepublic.com (under Obamatruthfile), you'll often see violence against Obama in code. No kidding. 
Here's a passage of the Grassfire-led "resistance:"

The Rebuild process will leave Americans with a clear ideological and practical choice between the Left’s statist model and our model based on God-given individual liberties.

Having rebuilt, we can then Restore conservative ideas to leadership by winning elections. Ultimately, a movement’s ideas must result in electoral victories because that is the basis for legitimate authority and ultimately for implementing one’s ideas. Resist. Rebuild. Restore. It’s not an easy path for grassroots conservatives, but it is a clear path. We know what we must do. And it begins with resisting rightly —respecting the new President but never backing away from the God-given ideals of freedom and liberty upon which this nation was founded.

I have to believe that Sean Hannity is also concerned about his ratings. 
You can also find Obama resistance from, believe it or not, the Pumas. You remember them. They believe Obama is a stealth Muslim terrorist, the guy who stole the election from Hillary.  

Another strain of resistors are the ones who claim Obama isn't eligible to be president. The nutty Wiley Drake, a pastor of all things, is hating on Rick Warren for accepting Obama's invitation to give the invocation. Oh, the irony. Drake is one of the sorry souls who have filed a lawsuit questioning Obama's birthplace and his eligibility to be president. I hope the people at his "church" are aware of his lunacy.

BUENA PARK — Southern Baptist Pastor Wiley Drake bashed Saddleback Church Pastor Rick Warren this week, saying "God will punish" Warren for agreeing to give the invocation at President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration next month.
"I pray He is kind to you in this punishment that is coming," Drake wrote in a widely-released e-mail. In it, the First Southern Baptist Church of Buena Park pastor criticizes Warren's "recent plan to invoke the presence of almighty God on this evil illegal alien," a reference to Obama.

Notice he said "evil." I'll say again, these folks are merely racists. It's really that simple. Otherwise, they would come up with grownup strategies of moving forward, while living with the fact that their guy or gal didn't win. They'd find constructive ways to make their voices heard.
