Obama Gives Commencement at University of Michigan

Tonight, Obama will speak at the White House Correspondents dinner sometime after 8 pm eastern. It will be live streamed at C-Span.org. WhiteHouse.gov also has a live audio stream. Here is his full commencement speech today (transcript here):

Here is a live stream of the commencement. Obama should be speaking soon. Obama is sitting next to Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
Update: Obama used the commencement speech to talk about the preciousness of our democracy. He said the villification and over the top rhetoric in our politics --use of terms "right wing nut," "left wing nut" --blocks progress. He praised republican presidents in history who've used government effectively, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt.
He said presidents throughout history have been accused of socialism, there were even duels. We have been fighting about the size of government since the beginning of our democracy. He wraps it all up with a call to the class of 2010 to participate in democracy.

Obama and his speechwriters

Updated May 1: Video of Obama's full speech here.

Update April 28: Big Ten will live stream the speech at 10:30 am eastern.

Obama will be the fourth sitting president to speak at the university's commencement. From U of Michigan:
President Barack Obama will deliver the spring 2010 commencement address at the University of Michigan, President Mary Sue Coleman announced today.

President Obama will receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree.

“President Obama has captured the imagination and enthusiasm of many students with his inspiring words of hope and change. We are honored to welcome a leader of his distinction and look forward to his message,” Coleman said. “We could not be happier for the graduates who will celebrate their academic achievements with the president of the United States.”

The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. May 1 in Michigan Stadium. The university awards degrees to about 3,500 undergraduate students at spring commencement, before an audience of more than 40,000. Ticket information will be released at a later date.

Obama delivered his first State of the Union speech in January after completing his first year as the 44th president of the United States. His speech focused on the economy, jobs and the importance of establishing and supporting small businesses. The state of Michigan, which has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, is trying to reinvent itself in the wake of the auto industry’s transformation.

Obama Gives Naval Academy Commencement

Update: Video below!
The commencement, which starts around 10 a.m., is being live streamed at cnn.com.
Jack McCain will be graduating at the commencement. Dad John McCain will be watching.
The speech will be Mr. Obama’s first military academy graduation address as president – a rite of passage for any commander in chief. A senior administration official, previewing the address, said Mr. Obama would use it to “discuss our shared commitment to uphold our fundamental principles and values because they help keep us safe’’ – in effect, a recap of the argument he made Thursday at the National Archives in Washington.
About the graduating class:
More than a quarter of this year's U.S. Naval Academy graduates will be commissioned as officers in the Marine Corps, the highest number in a decade and a reflection of the need for ground commanders in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The number of graduates sought by the Marine Corps has grown steadily since the aftermath of the 2001 terrorist attacks sent Marines into combat in the two countries. The academy had no trouble finding 273 graduating midshipmen eager to meet the Corps' request. WaPo

Obama's Arizona State Commencement Speech

Obama calls out greed in his ASU commencement speech and redefines success. The "me-first" society is over, he said. (I think that's why republicans are having such a difficult time).
It was one of his finest speeches.
Obama took on the ASU controversy and used it in his speech: "Your body of work is never done." He addressed it early on in his remarks.
Some background: When ASU president Michael Crow announced Obama as the commencement speaker, Crow followed up by saying that Obama wouldn't receive an honorary degree because he didn't have a big enough "body of work." In his speech, Obama said that Michelle Obama concurred, that his body of work wasn't large enough. Obama then went on to say that you can never rest on your laurels.
ASU eventually announced it would name an Obama Scholars program.
Obama concluded his speech saying: "Don't stop adding to your body of work."

Obama Gives Arizona State University Commencement

Update: See the video here.
Update: Live audio stream here. The speech starts at 7:10
ASU also is live streaming the speech here. Or you can watch it below.
Obama will deliver the commencement speech tonight but still won't get an honorary degree. The Obama Scholars is a pretty good idea but it's only an after thought by the school's president Michael Crow, embarrassed the first time around for refusing Obama an honorary degree for reasons no one is really sure of because the answer given is sorta lame. Read the background on that here. I'll post video when it's up.
Vice President Joe Biden got an honorary degree when he addressed the graduates of Syracuse University.

Even Oprah Winfrey got one at Duke University's commencement.

But President Barack Obama will not get one this evening when he addresses the graduates of Arizona State University. The school, which has honored the likes of Cesar Chavez, 1992, Walter Cronkite, 1989, Art Buchwald, 1988, Mo Udall, 1987, Henry Cisneros, 1986, Erma Bombeck, 1980, George Romney, 1962, and Barry Goldwater, 1961, said Obama had not accrued a "body of work'' sufficient for the honor.

Obama will even draw an honorary degree from the University of Notre Dame this weekend, the Catholic campus where the appearance of the pro-abortion-rights-pro-stem-cell-research president has created a stir and is prompting a protest sit-out Sunday among some of the school's graduating seniors.

Instead, the Arizona university, which was somewhat embarrassed by the original round of publicity surrounding its lack of a degree for the president, is naming its biggest scholarship program for the president -- the Obama scholars. Swamp

Obama to Fill In For Kennedy at Commencement

these are some lucky students.
On Sunday, May 25, 2008, United States Senator Barack Obama will deliver the Commencement Address at the 176th Commencement Ceremony at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut.

Senator Obama is honored to speak on behalf of United States Senator Edward M. Kennedy, who was previously scheduled to deliver the address.

“Ted and I talked about me filling in for him at Wesleyan University earlier this week. Considering what he's done for me and for our country, there's nothing I wouldn't do for him. So I'm looking forward to standing in his place on Sunday even though I know I won't be able to fill his shoes," Senator Obama said.
