Obama Announces $2 Billion Grant Program for Electric Car Batteries

Obama checked out electric cars in Pomona, which will be followed by a town hall at 1 pm with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, and a taping with Leno for an appearance tonight. Obama also was scheduled for a private meeting with Schwarzenegger and other officials.
At the Electric Vehicle Technical Center he said it was good to get out and "recharge your batteries." The 1908 Model T had better gas mileage than today's SUV, he said. $15 billion a year will be invested in alternative energies, he said. Obama announced a $2 billion competitive grant program to spark the manufacturing of batteries that run electric cars. The U.S. is spending $11 billion to upgrade power grid.
I'll post video when it's up.
LAT: Obama will tour the Electric Vehicle Technical Center run by Southern California Edison. It is one of two federal Department of Energy test areas designed to evaluate electric car performance. The president will tour a "Garage of the Future" test platform, part of how experts see electricity and transportation working together in the future.

In pushing for more jobs, Obama has frequently cited solar power and electric cars as being at the top of his agenda. Alternative energy would help free the nations from other, more costly resources such as oil.

Also at the facility will be 30 students from Village Academy High School, mentioned by Obama in a recent speech on educational reform.
