Melody Barnes Speaks on Stimulus Teaching Jobs

From the White House:
WASHINGTON – The Obama Administration today announced that preliminary indications are that state governments will credit the Recovery Act with creating and saving at least 250,000 education jobs across the country when reports filed on Recovery Act education spending to-date are posted online later this month.

"This is one more indication of how the Recovery Act is helping soften the blow of tough times, by keeping educators on the job and teachers in the classroom," said Vice President Joe Biden.

A report released today by the Domestic Policy Council, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education, finds that preliminary data shows that Recovery Act funding has enabled states to restore nearly all of their projected education budget shortfalls for FY09 and FY10. Filling these budget gaps has allowed the Recovery Act to avert layoffs of educators in school districts and universities across the nation, saving and creating at least a quarter of a million education jobs, while helping school districts make progress on reforms that will improve teaching and learning in America’s classrooms. To view the report, click HERE.

"Initial reporting from states shows that education stimulus dollars have created or saved over 250,000 education jobs across the nation and have been invested in the kinds of reforms that will help today's students compete in a global economy," said Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. "Early feedback from states also tells us that many districts are using stimulus dollars in ways that will move us beyond the status quo. There is a lot more work to be done but we applaud those districts that have successfully used stimulus funding to stave off catastrophic layoffs and invest in critical reforms."

The education jobs were reported as part of a historic effort the Administration has undertaken to provide the American people with more information about the Recovery Act at work than with any previous government program. In addition to the extensive data already available on every area of spending on Recovery.gov, recipients of the roughly one-third of the Recovery Act made up of projects and activities are required submit quarterly reports with more specific information about their spending and the related direct job impact to be publicly posted on the site.

The final individual reports will be published on Recovery.gov on October 30th after the current review period is completed; however, preliminary data from the states on education spending shows at least 250,000 education positions directly credited to the Recovery Act. This comes on top of last week’s data on Recovery contracts. On October 15th, preliminary data tied to federal contracts – less than 10 percent of total filings – was posted on Recovery.gov and showed 30,000 Recovery Act-funded direct jobs from that area of spending.

The law requires this more detailed reporting on $276 billion of the $787 billion Recovery Act – of which approximately $150 billion was already being put to work through September 30th and subject to reporting this quarter. Recipients are only asked to report the direct job impact and are instructed not to estimate indirect or induced job data.

For estimates of the total jobs impact of the Recovery Act, including the impact of the tax cuts, aid to individuals directly hurt by the recession, and much of the state fiscal relief, experts rely on macroeconomic modeling. Using these models, the Council of Economic Advisers and private forecasters estimated that the Recovery Act had helped to create or retain about 1 million jobs as of the end of August. Independent economists have also credited the Recovery Act with contributing between 2 and 3 percentage points to real GDP growth in the second half of this year.

President Obama signed the Recovery Act into law on February 17, 2009, as the country faced the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression. The Act was designed to create jobs and spur economic growth through a combination of tax relief for individuals and businesses, aid to hard-hit families and state and local governments, and funding for science, technology and infrastructure projects across the country.

Valerie Jarrett on Meet the Press Oct. 18

The first thing David Gregory does is throw up "Obama's economy" stats on the screen, laying blame. Gregory knows, anyone who's paying attention knows, that Obama is not to blame for those stats. There's no feasible way that democrats or republicans could've turned the economy around within 10 months.
The economic mess we got ourselves into will take time to recover from. We're at a point in history, reckoning with a number of different things, such as other nations emerging as more economically powerful, more educated than the U.S.
The nation's economy is fundamentally screwed up. It's been driven by greed at the top and consumer greed for more things. That kind of economy is not sustainable.
The question is, what's to be done?
At the roundtable, they discuss Maria Shriver's new report, A Women's Nation, which gives fuel to the idea that workplaces need to be more accommodating to families.

Obama's United We Serve Kicks Off June 22

United We Serve, a call to volunteer this summer, will run June 22 through Sept. 11. Watch the video here.
Michelle Obama and Maria Shriver will help kick off volunteer events across the country on Monday. They will help build a playground in San Francisco. Members of Obama's cabinet will also get in the act.
We stand at a unique moment in the history of our nation.

The challenges we face are unprecedented in their size and scope, and we cannot rely on quick fixes or easy answers to put us on the road to recovery. In this new century, we need to a build a new foundation for economic growth in America.

My Administration has already begun this work with dramatic new investments in education, health care and clean energy – investments that will create new jobs and lay the foundation for lasting prosperity.

But we cannot do this alone here in Washington. We can rebuild our schools, but we need people to be mentors and tutors in those schools. We can modernize our health care system, but we need volunteers in our hospitals and communities to help care for the sick and help people lead healthier lives. We can invest in clean energy, but we need people to use energy-efficient products in their homes and train for the green jobs of the future.

Economic recovery is as much about what you're doing in your communities as what we're doing in Washington – and it’s going to take all of us, working together.

That is why today, I'm announcing my summer service initiative: United We Serve.

This summer, I'm calling on all of you to make volunteerism and community service part of your daily life and the life of this nation. And when I say “all,” I mean everyone – young and old, from every background, all across this country. We need individuals, community organizations, corporations, foundations, and our government to be part of this effort.

We’ll be focusing on core areas of our recovery agenda – health care, energy independence, education and community and economic renewal. And we’ll officially kick off United We Serve on June 22nd, with members of my administration fanning out across America to participate in service events and encourage all Americans to join them.

You can get started right now by helping us provide those opportunities for people to serve.
If you’re involved in a service project in your community, go to Serve.gov and register it on this website, so that other people can sign up to join you. If you have an idea for a project – like getting a group together to volunteer each week at a homeless shelter, or read to kids at your local library, or pick up trash in a local park – you can go online and register that too. The website has everything you need to get started. And if you’re someone who’s interested in volunteering, you can go to Serve.gov to find opportunities in your community.

United We Serve will be led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, and it will run from June 22nd through September 11, a National Day of Service and Remembrance. And I hope you will continue the service-work you begin this summer for the rest of your life. Because America's new foundation will be built one community at a time -- and it starts with you.

Maria Shriver's Project to Improve Women's Lives

Maria Shriver says it's time to make women more successful. I'll say.
See Shriver's op-ed at HP here.
This new project aims to produce a "Shriver Report" that also will assess the status of women in government, business, faith institutions and healthcare, fields whose higher levels were all but closed to them in the Kennedy era.

Shriver's effort dovetails with an executive order recently signed by President Obama ordering a federal examination of women's status.

"Examining ways to improve the lives of women in this country is a noble cause, and I congratulate Maria Shriver and CAP on launching this new venture," White House senior advisor Valerie Jarrett said in a statement. "Maria's contributions to better understanding American women today are invaluable, and we look forward to the results of this work."

In a statement, Shriver said: "The world has changed dramatically since my uncle launched his commission in 1961, and the fact is we need a new portrait of the American woman so we can better understand what she needs to be successful in this complicated world. The truth is, we are now what I like to call, 'A Woman's Nation'. " LAT
Shriver was also a guest speaker at the Leadership for Health Summit held in Los Angeles today and tomorrow.

Maria Shriver Endorses Obama

hubby gov. arnold schwarzenegger endorsed mccain and who didn't see this coming:
In a dramatic moment at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion, California First Lady Maria Shriver just strode out onto a stage that had already seen its share of celebrities -- Oprah Winfrey and Stevie Wonder among them -- and announced that she was joining the Kennedy half of the family backing Barack Obama, reports our colleague Mark Z. Barabak, who is there.
