George H.W. Bush's Introduction of Obama in Texas

It's nice to hear Bush call Obama "our President." It's always refreshing when a republican is decent. At Bush's Points of Light event at Texas A&M, he had some kind words for Obama:

Obama Speaks at DNC Fundraiser in San Francisco Oct. 15

Obama will be swooping in to help the DNC raise some money tonight. He'll speak at the private fundraiser at the St. Francis Hotel at 7:20. Lefty O'Doul's, across the street from the hotel, is welcoming Obama, and so are protesters. Not rightwing protesters but protesters on the left, advocating a single payer healthcare system.
Obama is scheduled to parachute into Liberalville on Thursday afternoon and pick up a cool $2 million for the Democratic Party at a fundraiser at the St. Francis Hotel - then spend the night, before checking out early the next morning and heading to Houston for a community service forum hosted by former President George H.W. Bush. SF Chronicle
Tomorrow, Obama heads to Texas to commemorate George H.W. Bush's Points of Light service program.

Obama Visits Texas for Points of Light Oct. 16

Update: See Bush's refreshingly warm introduction of Obama here. See Obama's speech here.

Obama will visit Texas A&M on Friday to honor former President George H.W. Bush and his Points Of Light program, a volunteer program, or as Michele Bachmann might put it, a socialist re-education program. Points of Light press release:
On Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, President Barack Obama will join former President George H. W. Bush to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the vision of a thousand “Points of Light,” which catalyzed the modern volunteer service movement by hosting a presidential forum on community service at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M University. The event will honor the enormous advances of the service movement that started 20 years ago under the leadership of President George H.W. Bush and that has been sustained and grown through the leadership of Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush. President Obama has dramatically expanded this movement with his leadership of the bi-partisan Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. The event will also celebrate the contributions of more than 4,500 Daily Point of Light Award winners.

“This is a significant moment in history as these two leaders come together to celebrate their shared vision of service and volunteerism in America,” said Michelle Nunn, chief executive officer, Points of Light Institute. “In 1989, President Bush called the nation to service with the signing of the National and Community Service Act of 1990, the first piece of federal national service legislation that sparked a movement of service, leading to the creation of what is now Points of Light Institute. This call was rooted in our nation’s greatest tradition -- the compassionate and innovative power of citizen action. President Obama has lifted up this call to the nation and has said that he wants to make it a central cause of his Presidency.”

The Library event will bring together national and local civic leaders, Daily Point of Light Award winners, HandsOn Network affiliates, young people and corporate and philanthropic leaders. The Presidential Forum on Service will build upon President Obama's "United We Serve" call to service challenging all Americans to help lay a new foundation for growth in this country by engaging in sustained, meaningful community service. The forum is designed to engage the nation in dialogue about the role of service in our communities and in sharing innovative ideas about service as a solution to some of our most pressing issues.

“Dating back to our nation’s inception, and even before, the uniquely American neighbor-helping-neighbor spirit has sustained us, and strengthened us, through times of peace and prosperity, as well as crisis and challenge,” said President Bush. “I salute President Obama both for his leadership in renewing this call to community service and for his vision for engaging the next generation of Americans in volunteerism. Together with the Points of Light Institute, Barbara and I look forward to welcoming our President to the Bush Library in October.”

George H. W. Bush Says Obama Can Give Him a Holler

On Fox News Sunday, a humble George H. W. Bush says he'll be there if Obama needs advice.
WALLACE: You're also this week having lunch at the White House with your son, President Bush, President-elect Obama, and all the other former presidents.

If you have the opportunity to take Mr. Obama aside and talk to him from the heart, what is the key piece of advice you want to give him?

G.H.W. BUSH: Oh, I — at this juncture, it really would be gratuitous for me to be giving advice to Barack Obama. It would be more to wish him well. I talked to him right after the election and did that then, assured him that he was my president.

And I think it's more that than trying to figure out one thing or another. He'll be getting a lot of free advice, and some of it good, some of it not, but I get the feeling he can sort through that.

So I don't really think at this age in my life I can contribute much to his well-being in terms of governing. But if I saw something I thought was wrong, I'd like to have the feeling I could bring it up with him just based on some experience in the past, war and peace, Middle East, Europe, Germany.

I think one of the best things we participated in doing or facilitating was the unification of Germany. And that's — looks like it's very pacified now and they're here to keep.

But if there's some — some problem came up of that nature and it's — needed some advice of an old guy, hell, pick up the phone, give me — give me a holler. Read the transcript of the whole interview

Obama and Bush to Meet Again in January

Update: The White house says the meeting will take place Jan. 7 with Carter, GWHB, Clinton, Bush and Obama.
Original post:
That's according to CNN. I'd love to sit in on that meeting. I see this as a symbolic message to the world that says the US isn't sinking into a tar pit, because former presidents, republican and democrats, are working together. I'm sure there will be big photo ops.
CNN has learned that President-elect Barack Obama and President Bush have privately agreed to try and come together again in January for a second post-election meeting at the White House, but this time they're inviting the three living former presidents as well.

Two sources familiar with the plans tell CNN that at their first post-election meeting in the Oval Office on Nov. 10, Obama proposed that the two men get together again before the inaugural along with former presidents Jimmy Carter, George Herbert Walker Bush and Bill Clinton.
