Obama's Schedule May 27

Highlighting the day will be the press conference at 12:45 pm eastern.

In the morning, Obama welcomes the Duke basketball team to the White House.

At 11 am eastern, Obama, Biden, and Bill Clinton take a photo with the U.S. World Cup Soccer team.

At 2:05 pm, Obama will get briefed on the 2010 hurricane season.

At 3:10 pm, Obama holds a meeting with the President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

At 4:10 pm, The Obamas and Biden host a reception in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month.

At 6:15 pm, the Obama family leaves for Chicago.

At some point in the day, Hillary and James Jones will speak on the new national security strategy.

Stupak Says Close to a Deal on Abortion Language

Bill Clinton made calls last night to hash out abortion language. Bill always comes through in a pinch.

Stupak said he engaged in talks late into Saturday night.

The possible deal would focus on an executive order that would specify there would be no public funding for abortions in the healthcare bill.

More flippers: Melissa Bean now a yes, Chris Carney now a yes. Marcy Kaptur, also a holdout on abortion, now a yes. That means a deal must've been struck with Stupak. If a deal has been reached on abortion language, that means republican Joseph Cao will be voting yes, since he said the only thing holding him back was the language. BUT, does Cao have the guts to vote against his whole party?

White House and Cuba Reach Haiti Rescue Agreement

The global response to the Haitian earthquake crisis has inspired a rare diplomatic agreement between the United States and Cuba -- over flight rights for rescue efforts.

The U.S. needed Cuban help because its base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba -- yes, the sight of the much-disputed terrorism prison camp -- is also a medical facility for victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

This morning the White House announced: "We have coordinated with the Cuban government for authorization to fly medical evacuation flights from the U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay to Miami, through Cuban airspace, cutting 90 minutes off one-way flight time." USA Today

The White House is working with France, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and others to help Haiti.
Obama got to speak to Haiti's president this morning:

"President Obama spoke for roughly thirty minutes with President Preval of Haiti this morning. President Obama said that the world has been devastated by the loss and suffering in Haiti, and pledged the full support of the American people for the government and people of Haiti as it relates to both the immediate recovery effort, and the long-term rebuilding effort. President Preval said that he has been touched by the friendship of the American people, and expressed his condolences for the loss of American citizens in Haiti. He said that the needs are great, that relief is now flowing in to the people of Haiti, and noted the support that has come from both America and many other countries from the region and around the world. The two Presidents underscored the need to closely coordinate assistance efforts among the various parties, including the Haitian government, the United Nations, the United States and the many international partners and aid organizations on the ground. President Obama underscored his commitment to supporting the government and people of Haiti through his team on the ground. President Preval closed by passing a message to the American people, 'from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of the Haitian people, thank you, thank you, thank you.'" Politico

Clinton Urges Healthcare Bill Passage

Maybe the Diva democrats will listen to Bill Clinton, who's been there on health care. We need some resolve from the democrats but we just keep getting mush:

Former US president Bill Clinton on Thursday told fellow Democrats threatening to sink President Barack Obama's health care bill that they risk a "colossal blunder."
"Allowing this effort to fall short now would be a colossal blunder -- both politically for our party and, far more important, for the physical, fiscal and economic health of our country," he said in a statement.
Clinton was responding to another Democratic heavyweight, former party chairman Howard Dean, who called Thursday on Democrats to kill the health care reform bill, one of Obama's biggest priorities. AFP

In his most extensive interview since Barack Obama took office, former president Bill Clinton predicts that Obama will win passage of health-care reform, urging the Democratic party to "stand and deliver" while the Republicans are "in la-la land."

Endorsing Obama's push for health legislation, Clinton tells Esquire executive editor Mark Warren that Democrats should ignore opposition from the GOP. "The president's doing the right thing. It is both morally and politically right," Clinton says. "I wouldn't even worry about the Republicans. I'd worry about executing.

Bill Clinton speaks on the North Korea mission today. He suggested this could be an opening for the U.S. and N. Korea. He said he had a brief conversation with Obama and a conversation with Hillary, but he hasn't been fully debriefed yet and won't comment further.
