He Who Politicized Global Warming Criticizes Obama

Al Gore, who practically created climate deniers singlehandedly with his self righteous blather (albeit factual blather) on global warming, is criticizing Obama for not doing enough. Don't get me wrong, climate change is real. Just take a look at the report on global warming as a contributor to the possible mass extinction of ocean life here.
I admit, I have not read Gore's screed. Al Gore's conceit on the subject bores me. But here's a sampling.
But in spite of these and other achievements, President Obama has thus far failed to use the bully pulpit to make the case for bold action on climate change. After successfully passing his green stimulus package, he did nothing to defend it when Congress decimated its funding. After the House passed cap and trade, he did little to make passage in the Senate a priority. Senate advocates — including one Republican — felt abandoned when the president made concessions to oil and coal companies without asking for anything in return. He has also called for a massive expansion of oil drilling in the United States, apparently in an effort to defuse criticism from those who argue speciously that "drill, baby, drill" is the answer to our growing dependence on foreign oil.

The failure to pass legislation to limit global-warming pollution ensured that the much-anticipated Copenhagen summit on a global treaty in 2009 would also end in failure. The president showed courage in attending the summit and securing a rhetorical agreement to prevent a complete collapse of the international process, but that's all it was — a rhetorical agreement. During the final years of the Bush-Cheney administration, the rest of the world was waiting for a new president who would aggressively tackle the climate crisis — and when it became clear that there would be no real change from the Bush era, the agenda at Copenhagen changed from "How do we complete this historic breakthrough?" to "How can we paper over this embarrassing disappointment?"

Al Gore Responds to Palin's Junk Science Commentary

Sarah Palin has no awareness of her ignorance. I think that's what frightens us the most. The other frightening thing is that she has so many followers and I say followers because her supporters tend to blindly follow her based on her "family values."
Read her nuttiness in the Washington Post. The Washington Post? Yep. That's also frightening. Palin gets to voice her looniness over millions of people who are brighter and newsworthy, yet not controversial enough to make it to the media. Palin is leading the further dumbing down of our nation.
"Climategate" is such a non-issue. Andrea Mitchell's interview with Gore:

Wingnuts Trying to Kill Science

The rightwing believe killing the science on climate change is good for business because if there is no such thing as man-made climate change, then businesses don't have to spend money to abide by environmental regulations.

In fact, the opposite is true. Even if there were no such thing as man-made climate change, there is such a thing as polluting the air and water so that it effects our health.

Ignorant folks still think that climate change is something that you "believe in." Wingnuts have another agenda on science and that is it doesn't fit with their religious beliefs.

Truthfully, I think there is some politicking going on regarding climate change. "Climate-gate" is evidence of that. Wingnuts also despise Al Gore, who is the leading advocate for climate change, so following wingnut irrationality, hating Gore means denying climate change.

But scientists behaving badly and wingnuts dislike of Gore doesn't mean that climate change is fantasy.

Sarah Palin is one of those leading the way in the fight against science. The past couple of years have been really interesting. Mediocre has risen to the top and wingnut voices seem to be getting a disproportionate amount of air time. I think it's an example of our failing education system. People who aren't getting science and math in school are turning to religion for their answers.

Climate change is discussed in this video. Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute, who attended the jobs summit yesterday, also says something very interesting -- that companies aren't hiring, in part, because they can't find workers with the right skills. Seems to me the fact that companies can't find skilled workers is linked to our failing education system, which is responsible for creating the type of environment where a person such as Sarah Palin could be worshipped.

Release of Journalists Was a Team Effort

The NY Times has a good story telling everyone's role in freeing Euna Lee and Laura Ling. It was a team effort and no egos stood in the way:
Mrs. Clinton was deeply involved in the case, too. She proposed sending various people to Pyongyang — including Mr. Clinton’s vice president, Al Gore — to lobby for the release of the women, before Mr. Clinton emerged as the preferred choice of the North Koreans, people briefed on the talks said.
.....
North Korea signaled its desire to have Mr. Clinton act as a special envoy in conversations with Ms. Ling and Ms. Lee, who relayed that message to their families in the middle of July, according to a senior administration official. The message was passed to Mr. Gore, who contacted the White House, which then explored whether such a mission would be successful.

Mr. Obama did not speak directly with Mr. Clinton before the mission. But his national security adviser, Gen. James L. Jones, contacted the former president to sound him out. The senior official said the administration did “due diligence” with the North Koreans to ensure that if Mr. Clinton went, he would return with the journalists. He also denied that Mr. Clinton apologized as a condition of obtaining the pardons from the government.

As president, Mr. Clinton had sent Mr. Kim a letter of condolence on the death of his father, Kim Il-sung, according to a former official. For Mr. Kim, the former official said, freeing the women was a “reciprocal humanitarian gesture.” Read the whole thing.
The Obama administration seems to have separated itself from Clinton's efforts so that it could get back on track with credible six party talks. Not mixing the two was brilliant if you ask me.
Lee and Ling will address the media tomorrow.

Hillary: Seeking Journalists Release on Humanitarian Grounds

The U.S. may send Al Gore or Bill Richardson to negotiate their release. In the past, Richardson has successfully negotiated with North Korea for the release of a U.S. citizen.

Obama and Gore Meet Tomorrow

Obama and Gore will meet. No other details yet. Al Gore has been mentioned as an energy czar. Gore's latest "reality" clean coal commercial, which says there is no such thing, is said to be a slam at Obama, who has talked about the possibility of clean coal.
Salon calls Gore the real "rival" that Obama should employ.
Update: Gore not interested in a government postion. How many times must a guy say he's not interested in government anymore?

Gore Loses Me on 10,000 Square Feet Home

I like Al Gore. I like his vision. I think he's right about the urgency to stop global warming
But building his own 10,000 square-foot spread (Brokaw asked him about his home on Meet the Press), no matter how green, seems to defeat the purpose.
I get the critics on this one. He's not setting a good example. Gore said he's not perfect.
It seems to me being green isn't about using more fancy stuff. I mean, how many could build the kind of green house that Gore has? To me, being green is using fewer resources. It took a lot of other resources, obviously, just to build that kind of house.

No Obama Gore Ticket

No Al Gore in an Obama administration either. It looks like Gore is really serious about working outside of politics. I don't blame him. He's accomplished a lot outside of the political arena.
WSJ: Yet Gore also disappointed many attendees here when asked if he would accept a position in an Obama administration. The question prompted cheers from the crowd.

“I am really honored by the suggestion that some have made that I consider taking a position of some kind in the next administration,” Gore said, “I want to convey my respect for the idea even as I explain to you why I don’t think that’s the best idea.”

Gore said his overall goal is “to focus on and try and enlarge the political space in which we address this climate crisis” and “to bring about a sea change in public opinion across party lines.” In other words, he believes he has a better chance of achieving his goals working outside the political arena rather than in it.

Al Gore To Speak On Global Warming

Update: Read speech here.
Al Gore's expected to speak in Washington today and he'll tie together global warming, energy and national security to draw the big picture-- we need to get off of oil.
Gore could really accomplish his goals with the vice presidency. He could be a non-traditional vice president. That's not to hard to imagine in an Obama administration. I'd like to see Arnold Schwarzenegger as energy czar.
It also occurred to me yesterday that Colin Powell could be Obama's vice president choice. It seems the attention has been drawn away from Powell. When people talk about Powell now it's that he's talking to Obama and McCain to see who he should back.
WaPo: Just as John F. Kennedy set his sights on the moon, Al Gore is challenging the nation to produce every kilowatt of electricity through wind, sun and other Earth-friendly energy sources within 10 years, an audacious goal he hopes the next president will embrace.

The Nobel Prize-winning former vice president said fellow Democrat Barack Obama and Republican rival John McCain are "way ahead" of most politicians in the fight against global climate change.

Rising fuel costs, climate change and the national security threats posed by U.S. dependence on foreign oil are conspiring to create "a new political environment" that Gore said will sustain bold and expensive steps to wean the nation off fossil fuels.

"I have never seen an opportunity for the country like the one that's emerging now," Gore told The Associated Press in an interview previewing a speech on global warming he planned to give Thursday in Washington.
