One of the reasons people are pushing back against organized religion is because it's become quite clear that people abuse religion. Religion is used as a weapon to destroy one another.
Religion in itself is good. If people practiced their respective religions as they were intended, the world would be a better place. But people don't use religion for its intended purpose.
People use religion to be self righteous and condemning.
There's also the realization that you don't have to be religious to be moral. In fact, many people who are spiritual, atheist or agnostic are more moral than religious folk.
The 2008 campaign was a good example of people acting immorally, wielding religion to spread hate. Many people who claimed to be Christian at Sarah Palin's rallies were some of the most hateful people on the planet. Then you have Fox promoting the teaching of intelligent design in science class. Science is science. This nation can't afford to be dumbed down much more.
