The political theater going on today is extraordinary!
What is Boehner even talking about? Obama asked for a compromise bill, not a tea party bill.
Mark his words: Mitch McConnell says the country will not default. "That is not going to happen."
Extraordinary. Extraordinary!
Nancy Pelosi: "I will not yield to you." She asks: Why with this one president, this time, would we put up barriers to raising the debt ceiling? Good question.

Boehner Tells GOP to Line Up
Update on the Boehner plan. Tea partiers line up after Boehner makes deeper cuts. But Senate democrats say the bill is DOA.
Boehner is in a pickle with the tea party peeps.
McCain tells tea partiers (those newbie six monthers) that their opposition to raising the debt ceiling is "bizarro"
Boehner is in a pickle with the tea party peeps.
House Speaker John A. Boehner sought Wednesday to whip his follow Republicans into line behind his bill for a short-term increase in the federal debt ceiling despite a new congressional budget analysis that showed his plan would cut spending less than a rival Senate proposal. These are the kinds of republicans Boehner is dealing with: Florida's Gov. Rick Scott says we shouldn't raise the debt ceiling. I don't know a whole lot about the debt ceiling but I think I know more than him. This guy is clueless. Watch: The debt limit made easy.
In a closed-door meeting with GOP House members, Boehner (Ohio) told skeptical conservatives to “get your ass in line” and drop their opposition to his plan to raise the borrowing limit in two stages tied to deep spending cuts. Boehner had planned to bring the bill to the House floor Wednesday, but he postponed a vote on it until Thursday at the earliest in the face of resistance from tea party-allied conservatives, who saw the plan as falling short of the fiscal restraint that Republicans promised when they took control of the House in 2010. Geithner: Short Term Plan Unacceptable
As seen on twitter:
Today, Boehner is coming up with another plan, unilaterally, according to WaPo. If the republicans can force a short-term debt deal, that will mean further damage to our economy, therefore further damage to Obama, which is and has been the republican end goal from the get go. It's interesting that Boehner, one of the key negotiators, made room for Fox News Sunday, whose audience is the choir.
Watch Geithner. The problem for Boehner is he needs some democrats to support his plan because there are some House members who absolutely will NOT increase the debt ceiling. The bottom line: Geithner says the debt ceiling will be raised.
Maybe Speaker Boehner should try this tack: "Do you love your country more than you hate President Obama?"Watch this flashback on to a time when democrat and republican leaders got along for the good of the nation.

Geithner appeared on a series of political talk shows Sunday to insist that any deal must lift the legal limit on the nation’s borrowing long enough to remove the possibility of a default from the politically heated presidential campaign season.
“There’s nothing wrong with doing this in stages,” he said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “But what it cannot do is leave the threat of default hanging over the economy.”
Further raising tensions at the start of a critical day of negotiations, House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) indicated Sunday that Republicans could push forward with a plan this week, even without Democratic support.
That threat of unilateral action further muddles the ongoing talks among congressional leaders of both parties and the White House on a deal that could get support from all sides. More at WaPo

Republicans Feel Under Fire
Republicans laugh it up, feel like they're under enemy fire. This is all very interesting since it was actually Eric Cantor who walked right out of the Biden budget talks, which led to Obama's involvement. The Biden talks had 10 sessions and Obama is now on his fifth today.
Boehner says the only choice is to cut spending and not raise taxes, when economists say the only way to reduce the deficit is to cut spending (expenses) AND raise taxes (increase income).
Obama wants deal by Friday:

Obama, Biden, Kasich and Boehner Golf June 18
Tomorrow at 9:30 am eastern, Obama plays golf with Biden, Boehner and Ohio Gov. Kasich.
The outing is an opportunity for the foursome to have a conversation, said Jay Carney at the press briefing, "to socialize in a way that so rarely happens in Washington."

Boehner Congratulates Bush and Obama on bin Laden Mission
John Boehner commends Obama along with George W. Bush -- in the same sentence. I don't mind credit where credit is due, but Obama is our president and it was HIS team that followed the tip that came in August, hunted bin Laden down and finally took him out. It was Obama who made all the crucial decisions. I don't understand what Bush's role was. I know he wanted to get bin Laden, but he didn't. Republicans are becoming very comical.

How the Budget Deal Got Done
Apparently, there was some lightheartedness in all the muck.
In one of the White House meetings, a light moment occurred when the negotiators began focusing on the dozens of policy restrictions that Republicans wanted to include.
According to White House aides, Nabors had an assistant make photocopies of the long list of provisions, which ended up taking time. Boehner joked about the White House needing faster copying machines, and Obama said the copies were being mimeographed, an ancient copying technology.
A key point came Thursday night, according to the Senate Democratic staffer and White House aides.
The two sides were moving closer to agreement on the amount of spending cuts but Republicans were insisting on including curbs on federal funds for family planning programs - a demand that Democrats were just as adamantly opposing.
It was in those conversations, the Democratic aide said, that Obama and Reid said Democrats would not agree to the family planning restrictions, with the president himself saying it would not be included in any final deal. At one point, according to White House aides, Vice President Joe Biden flashed anger over the GOP's insistence on family planning restrictions. Read it all -- it's very interesting -- at AP

On Planned Parenthood and Absurdity the Day After
It should be noted that the pay of our soldiers -- who sacrifice their very lives for us -- and the entire nation hung in the balance because republicans don't like Planned Parenthood. Somewhere along the way a very important organization that provides contraceptives, cancer and STD screening and other health services for women (and men) became known as a liberal organization, likely because the organization also provides abortion services, which is 3% of what it does (see a chart). Jon Kyl, one of our nation's leaders, outright lied saying 90% of what Planned Parenthood does is abortions.
Abortion has become known as a liberal thing, but I'm 100% certain republicans get abortions too.
While Planned Parenthood gets $360 million in federal money annually, it's illegal to use the money for abortion services.
Planned Parenthood PREVENTS PREGNANCIES by providing contraceptives and information. It's called Planned Parenthood, which means planning for parenthood. Along the way, Planned Parenthood became labeled a liberal organization and those on the right irrationally demonize it.
Who loses? Women do, especially the poor, as always. WHEN THE POOR LOSE WE ALL LOSE. Seems to me this nation is always hostage to the demands of the left and the right and they're always arguing about abortion. They never actually solve anything. They don't reduce abortions. They're just more entrenched.
Where is the reason? It's absurd that our government was set to shutdown because of Planned Parenthood.
The Obama and Boehner script when it was down to the wire:

But when Boehner later asked for the elimination of funds for Title X -- spending for women's health and family planning organizations that also provide abortion services, the aide said the president flatly refused.
The president replied, "Nope. Zero."
Boehner continued to push to discuss the funds, the aide recalled.
The President repeated: "Nope. Zero."
"'John, this is it,'" the aide described the president as saying. "'This is it, John."
There was a long pause as no one spoke in the Oval Office spoke.
The Planned Parenthood issue was resolved that Thursday night. MSNBC

Boehner: Deal Made But not Official Yet
Update 11 pm ET: Obama to speak in a few minutes. Deal made. Look to CSPAN. Republicans and democrats will be touting their lousy "wins." They should all be embarrassed.
10:28 p.m.-- BREAKING: House Speaker John Boehner outlined the parameters of a long-term funding deal, telling his members in a closed-door meeting, "This is the best deal we could get out of them," according to a lawmaker in the room who asked not to be identified.
The deal is still not official, Boehner cautioned, but in a sign things are coming to a close, the House is preparing for a 5-6 day short-term continuing resolution with $3 billion in cuts, he told members according to the lawmaker. The meeting is still underway. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., was scheduled to address the Senate at 10:30 p.m. EDT. National Journal

Huckabee and Bachmann Say Time to Move on
In a sign that republicans may realize that the good fight is with the 2012 budget, not the one that funds the rest of 2011, Mike Huckbee says cut a deal and tea party leader Obamacare Michele Bachmann said she's moved on. The one and only Karl Rove has come up with his own republican face saver -- a shutdown will strengthen Obama.
Frankly, there's too much at stake to shut down the government, especially troop pay. It's criminal for their pay to be partial and delayed. Looking on the bright side, at least a whole lot of people are learning what government does and how government affects their daily lives. CNN has a chart on what would/wouldn't be closed in the event of a shutdown.

Mike Huckabee urged his fellow Republicans to throw in the towel on the budget stalemate, saying the GOP has the "most to lose" and needs to show it understands the personal impact a government shutdown would have on everyday Americans. Reid Says Abortion Holding up Budget
Obama canceled his trip to Indianapolis today to deal with this nonsense (the latest).
Boehner, who spoke for less than a minute this morning, blamed spending -- spending on what?
Reid already made his comments this morning. Republicans have a beef with Planned Parenthood and we're all in the middle of it.

Shields and Brooks on Budget, Debt and Boehner
I agree with David Brooks and Mark Shields on the budget. I wish Obama would've made the case for reforming Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare, which account for 60% of the budget. But entitlements were left untouched. Obama missed the opportunity to get out in front of the issue. It would also be nice if he slashed the defense budget by ending whatever we're doing in Afghanistan.
Seems to me the longer we wait to make the cuts, the worse the poor will suffer. It also seems that Americans are ready to hear the message that the nation needs to get its financial house in order. Americans, drowning in debt, need to see government lead the way.

Why Boehner Doesn't Stand up to Birthers
I would argue that birtherism hurts our nation more than the national debt. But John Boehner, and other GOP leaders, refuse to take a stand against birtherism. They cite not wanting to tell the American people how to think, which doesn't make logical sense. If that were true, then they would stop telling us how to think about the nation's budget and deficit. Here is the logical reason: 50% of GOP primary voters are birthers. From PPP:
Birtherism is alive and well within the GOP ranks, and their 2012 nominee preferences tell a story about the difficulty Mitt Romney faces in trying to appeal to an electorate that's a whole lot further out there than he is.I don't think Mitt, a Mormon, stands a chance of winning the republican nomination because of the GOP base's prejudices against Mormons. Ironically, all else aside, Romney would have better luck getting the nomination if he were a democrat.
Birthers make a majority among those voters who say they're likely to participate in a Republican primary next year. 51% say they don't think Barack Obama was born in the United States to just 28% who firmly believe that he was and 21% who are unsure. The GOP birther majority is a new development. The last time PPP tested this question nationally, in August of 2009, only 44% of Republicans said they thought Obama was born outside the country while 36% said that he definitely was born in the United States. If anything birtherism is on the rise.

Boehner's Interview With Brian Williams Video
Brian Williams asks Boehner's about the birther disruption today.
In this clip, Boehner speaks on crying and smoking and somehow Boehner is under the illusion that there is a level playing field out there for folks to succeed. In my view, that's the main difference between democrats and republicans. Democrats know that the playing field is far from level or fair, which is why dems strive for social justice. Republicans, on the other hand, believe all anyone has to do is try real hard and pull themselves up by the bootstraps. They don't recognize inequities.
Boehner on partisanship "scar tissue" and his opinion on healthcare. Boehner says everyone has access to healthcare, though they may not have access to affordable insurance. That is so not true.

Pelosi and Boehner Address 112th Congress Video
Boehner, who speaks at the 27 minute mark, gets weepy. Like I've said before, I like Boehner's weepiness. I'm familiar with weepiness. I see it as a sign that he's all in, never mind whether he's right or wrong. People whose emotions are on the surface tend to be genuine. Although, a double standard exists. Pelosi couldn't get away with a consistent flow of tears.

Boehner Gets Emotional, Really Emotional
Update: Obama called Boehner tonight and a few others:
Is Boehner really this choked up or is he drunk? Kind of sweet in an odd way, so long as he's not drunk. It will be interesting to see how Obama and Boehner work together. If he's a crier, there are possibilities:Mr. Obama told Messrs. Boehner and McConnell that he was “looking forward to working with him and the Republicans to find common ground, move the country forward and get things done for the American people.”
Mr. Boehner’s office released a statement saying, “They had a brief but pleasant conversation.”

Gibbs Speaks on Boehner and Midterms
It's ironic that people are ready to jump back into the arms of republicans, when the recession happened on their watch. Obama's just been cleaning up the mess. Republicans have been watching on the sidelines, gesturing and criticizing. Not only have they done nothing to help, but they put us here in the first place. It's all very, very strange.
