While Obama holds an overall 50-36 percent advantage over McCain in New York, Obama stands even with McCain among white voters: Obama 42, McCain 43.
This represents a gain since an April 18 survey, when New York's Sen. Hillary Clinton still was in contention for the Democratic nomination, and in a matchup with Obama McCain claimed the support of white voters by a margin of 48 to 38 percent.
Obama's current hold on the black vote in New York State is solid: 87-6 percent against McCain. And Obama holds an overwhelming advantage among younger voters there - 59-29 among voters under 45. He leads among men, 45-50, and among women, 53-32.
Also: The home-state crowd is warning against that "dream team:"
New York State voters - Republicans actually -- say, by a margin of 48 - 42 percent, that Obama should not pick Clinton as his running mate. Democrats support the idea 53 - 35, while Republicans oppose it 62 - 27 percent and independents oppose it 53 - 41 percent.
