Obama on Working Class in 2004

this video of obama on the charlie rose show was done in 2004 and he says what he said in san francisco, which got distorted by clinton and mccain and eaten up by the rabid, indiscriminate and knee-jerk media.

obama talks specifically about why working class and rural people don't vote on economic issues -- they tend to identify with republicans because republicans boast about issues such as gun control and faith and gay marriage. obama says on the economic front, they don't think that washington can do anything to help them. he also specifically says that we shouldn't be "condescending" toward their traditions and beliefs.

unlike hillary, who will do or say whatever it takes, obama truly understands this issue. that's what makes this faux elitism criticism so ironic.

again, the question is why is it hard to reach the working class -- why don't they vote on economic issues?

obama says:

what they do know is they can go out with their friends and hunt and feel a sense of comaraderie and there's a connection between hunting and them going out hunting going out with their father to hunt, just as there is a connection maybe for their wives going to church or going with their mother to church or maybe their grandmother.

if we don't appear to have plausible answers on the economic front and we appear to be condescending toward those traditions that are giving their lives some stability, then they're going to opt for at least that party that still provides them something solid to stand on.
