Obama is holding a town hall near Senator Evan Bayh's home, so speculation is swirling that he will also meet with Bayh. The Indiana Senator Evan Bayh supported Hillary Clinton in the primaries. The event is likely to be livestreamed at cnn.com.

Obama is scheduled to host a town hall meeting at Concord High School in Elkhart, Ind. The event will be held in the McCuen Gym. Doors open at 7:15 a.m.

MSNBC: On the Veepwatch front, nothing's on Obama's schedule yet, but the traveling press registration e-mail has us flying to South Bend at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and not leaving until 3:25 p.m. the next day.

It seems seems like an awfully long time to be in one place. (Where exactly is Evan Bayh?) Bayh's home town is near Terre Haute, Ind.

They keep saying Hillary Clinton owes $25 million. Hasn't she gotten any money? Of course she has. She paid one of her debts: 

Indy: Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign has paid off its $55,000 debt to Indiana University for events it held on the Bloomington campus.
IU spokesman Larry MacIntyre said auditorium director Doug Booher had received the final payment from Clinton for campus campaign visits.
The campaign had previously paid about $20,000 of its debt, and recently sent a final check for $32,000. The campaign had also paid about $3,000 for Chelsea Clinton's visit.

What Tim Kaine, the harmonica-playing, bilingual governor, has to say about Obama.

Also, all these mumblings that Obama needs a military veep, what's to stop Obama from announcing cabinet members, which include military types? Maybe he'll announce his vice president and.... Obama may not have military experience but he's strong on foreign policy (never mind what the media says), so I suspect his veep won't necessarily have military experience either. 

Politico: As Senator Barack Obama turns to the choice of his running mate, Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine has emerged as one of the campaign’s potential finalists, sources familiar with conversations in Richmond and in Chicago said.

Kaine, an early Obama supporter whose biography nicely dovetails with the Illinois senator’s, "ranks very, very high on the short list," said a source who has spoken recently to senior Obama aides about Kaine.

Kaine "is getting a critical examination," the source said.

The 50-year-old Virginia governor is among a handful of logical, and much-discussed, choices to join Obama on the campaign trail. Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, former Georgia Sen. Sam Nunn and Delaware Senator Joe Biden are among others frequently mentioned.

Obama and his top advisers met Monday afternoon at the Washington, D.C., law office of Eric Holder, one of the leaders of his vice presidential vetting team.

Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine has told close associates that he has had "very serious" conversations with Sen. Barack Obama about joining the Democratic presidential ticket and has provided documents to the campaign as it combs through his background, according to several sources close to Kaine.

Obama has revealed little about which way he is leaning. And despite rising anticipation that a decision is imminent, campaign officials said an announcement is likely in mid-August, shortly before the Democratic National Convention. Obama's top aides, David Plouffe and David Axelrod, huddled yesterday in the Washington office of Eric Holder, who along with Caroline Kennedy is vetting potential running mates.

Although rumors have circulated about former military leaders and other nontraditional contenders, including Republicans, Obama's pool of prospects is heavy on longtime senators with foreign policy experience. Kaine and Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius are the only state leaders believed to be under serious consideration, sources close to Obama said.

Bayh and Biden Would Say Yes to Veep

It's a switch for Joe Biden, who seemed adamantly opposed to being vice president. Evan Bayh, Hillary's fan, said he's say yes. I say yes to Biden and no to Bayh.

Right now, I'm thinking Obama Edwards. They seem to go together. Obama could then stuff his cabinet with in-the-know military types.

But in the last two weeks, two Senate Democrats have flatly confessed they'd take the position if asked. On Sunday, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden said candidly, "The answer I’ve got to say is yes," if the No. 2 position is offered.

And on Tuesday, Sen. Evan Bayh, a former Hillary Clinton supporter from the potential battleground state of Indiana, also admitted he'd take the job if it is offered.

"I don't think it's the kind of thing you say no to….the answer to that is yes," Bayh said in an interview on MSNBC.

"If you care about serving your country, that is the kind of thing that you do," he argued.

Another thing, it seems the vice presidential process is doing a good job of weeding out the bad democrats, the ones who are still holding their breath.

The Short VP List and The Real List

There's a difference:

NYT: There are the real lists, bluff lists and lists of politicians who make a big show of saying they don’t want to be on the list even though they never were or would have been. Entire ballrooms in Denver and St. Paul could be filled with people who will claim to have been on Mr. Obama’s and Mr. McCain’s short lists.

“There’s a short list for show, and then there’s the actual short list,” said Chuck Todd, the NBC News political director. And the “short list for show” can actually become quite long. It could include names that the campaign releases as plums to key supporters, whether or not said key supporters are actually being considered as running mates.

Here's my speculation: Joe Biden is out. Jim Webb is out. Mark Warner is out. They've all said they're not interested and seemed to mean it.

Meanwhile, Frank Rich says we've all forgotten the war. Sadly, people are still getting killed but we've tuned out, largely because we want out.
Expect more war mongering from John McCain, though:

NYT: One neocon pundit, Charles Krauthammer, summed up this alternative-reality mind-set in a recent column piously commanding Mr. McCain to “make the election about Iraq” because “everything is changed,” and “we are winning on every front.” The war, he wrote, can be “the central winning plank of his campaign.” (Italics his.)

This hyperventilating wasn’t necessary, because this is what Mr. McCain is already trying to do. His first general election ad, boosted by a large media buy in swing states this month, was all about war. It invoked his Vietnam heroism and tried to have it both ways on Iraq by at once presenting Mr. McCain as a stay-the-course warrior and taking a (timid) swipe at President Bush. “Only a fool or a fraud talks tough or romantically about war,” Mr. McCain said in his voice-over. That unnamed fool would be our cowboy president, who in March told American troops how he envied their “in some ways romantic” task of “confronting danger.”

Really, does anyone think we're "winning" the war. We don't even know what that means. But we can't discount McCain's fear mongering. Bush proved that it works.

Jim Webb Says He Doesn't Want Veep Spot

on npr minutes ago, jim webb, promoting his new book, answered questions about a possible vice president slot. here's some of what he said paraphrased.
if i had to pick a prototype politially, daniel moynihan is the man i admire the most. he was able to bring intellectual thought into the debate.
webb went on to say: i have a great deal of regard for barack obama, also hillary by the way. but i can do you a lot more good in the senate.
