Obama Visits NYPD Before Fundraiser to Say Thanks

Obama gets an NYPD jacket that says POTUS.
President Obama made an unannounced stop at One Police Plaza in Manhattan Thursday evening, where he thanked New York City police officers for their handling of the attempted car bombing in Times Square.

“The country is proud of you," Obama, who was accompanied by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, told the officers.

The president greeted the roughly three dozen officers, who were seated at desks with computer terminals and rose to their feet when he walked in the door. Read more at Politico
Following Obama's NYPD visit, he'll head to the St. Regis where he'll speak at 7:05 pm eastern, at a DCCC fundraiser.

Obama Speaks at DNC Fundraisers in New York City

Update Oct. 21: See the speech to Organizing for America in NYC here and Obama's speech to Wall Streeters here.

Update: Obama to tell the moneymakers attending the fundraisers: Don't fight regulations.
Update: See Obama's speech to Joint Terrorism Task Force agents here.
Obama will speak at two DNC fundraisers in NYC, one at 7:10 pm and the other at 8:20 pm. Democrats need as many democrats to win so that they can keep bickering with each other.
While in New York City, Obama will visit FBI headquarters to thank agents for the arrest of the Denver terrorist suspect, Najibullah Zazi.
At separate events in New York City, the president will raise money both for Bill Owens, a Democrat trying to win a special election in an upstate New York congressional district, and for the Democratic National Committee. The national party fundraising event alone is expected to generate between $2 million to $3 million. MSNBC

Obama's got more fundraising planned:
By week's end, Obama will also go to a New Jersey rally for Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine, who is trying to fend off a tight Republican challenge; visit Boston to raise money for Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, who is up for election in 2010; and travel to a Connecticut fundraiser for Sen. Chris Dodd, who is seeking another term next year. And in one week, Obama will campaign for Democrat R. Creigh Deeds, who is trailing in the race for Virginia governor.

Several factors beyond Obama's control will shape next month's races, but he puts his political standing on the line by investing his own time, and the White House is carefully calculating when he can afford to spare it.

Obama plans a final burst on behalf of candidates right before the Nov. 3 election. AP

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is convening a Summit on Climate Change – on 22 September 2009 – to focus Heads of State and Government on the need for urgent action, and to mobilize the highest level political will needed to reach a fair, effective, and scientifically ambitious global climate deal at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen this December.

The Summit aims to advance the negotiations, but is not a negotiating session itself. It provides a forum where leaders can discuss fundamental issues, find common ground and provide guidance to their negotiators. The main outcome of the Summit will be captured in a Chair’s Summary. UN

Obama To Keynote NAACP 100th Anniversary

Meeting in the Rose Garden
UPDATE July 16: See Obama's speech here.
Obama will be in New York to speak July 16 at the NAACP convention. Obama will speak at 7:30 pm eastern. CNN.com or msnbc.com will probably live stream it.
In the video below, Al Sharpton speaks on Obama's appearance. He also speaks on the recent discrimination experienced by children, who were thrown out of a pool because they were black and Latino. Sadly, we are nowhere near post racism. I learned a lot about that during the 2008 campaign and watching Sarah Palin rallies. But younger people are far more enlightened than the older folks and it may be a matter of time. I believe it all comes down to our public school system. The more educated someone is the less likely they are to be racist. Bigotry is a sign of stupidity, though there are people who are smart, some Congress members come to mind, yet still racist. That has a lot to do with age and where they grew up. The South still has a lot of work to do.
