Fact Check: It falsely claims in mailers and TV ads that Obama plans to ban handguns, hunting ammo and use of a gun for home defense.
Summary
A National Rifle Association advertising campaign distorts Obama's position on gun control beyond recognition.
The NRA is circulating printed material and running TV ads making unsubstantiated claims that Obama plans to ban use of firearms for home defense, ban possession and manufacture of handguns, close 90 percent of gun shops and ban hunting ammunition.
Much of what the NRA passes off as Obama's "10 Point Plan to 'Change' the Second Amendment" is actually contrary to what he has said throughout his campaign: that he "respects the constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms" and "will protect the rights of hunters and other law-abiding Americans to purchase, own, transport, and use guns."
The NRA, however, simply dismisses Obama's stated position as "rhetoric" and substitutes its own interpretation of his record as a secret "plan." Said an NRA spokesman: "We believe our facts."
Perhaps so, but believing something doesn't make it so. And we find the NRA has cherry-picked, twisted and misrepresented Obama's record to come up with a bogus "plan."

NRA: We Believe Our Facts
That's what much of the republican side of this election has come down to -- repeat a lie often enough and it becomes truth. Obama has said he's not going to touch anyone's guns. But the NRA knows that threatening the ban of guns will scare up some votes for McCain, who gun lovers love because McCain is a war monger.

NRA Spending $40 Million to Attack Obama
Where do they get that kind of money? Wouldn't it be better spent elsewhere? Gun ownership classes, or something like that.
My feeling is that few people are worried about their guns being taken away. Really, they must know that Obama isn't going to take away their precious guns. Anyone who's top priority is gun ownership is in the minority or just masking their real opposition to Obama.
It seems Americans are going to be less focused on issues such as guns and abortion. Only the extremists-- on both sides -- see no middle ground. Social wedge issues like those just aren't going to cut it this election.
Politico:
The National Rifle Association plans to spend about $40 million on this year’s campaign, with $15 million of that devoted to portraying Barack Obama as a threat to the Second Amendment rights upheld last week by the Supreme Court.
“Our members understand that if Barack Obama is elected president, and he has support in the Senate to confirm anti-gun Supreme Court nominees, [the District of Columbia v. Heller decision] could be taken away from us in the future,” Chris Cox, head of the NRA’s political arm, told Politico.
The politically powerful gun rights group will split its message efforts between communicating with its 4 million members and the tens of millions more firearms owners across the country.

Americans are going to vote democrat, not necessarily for Obama (though many of us will), but against the republicans, who've fallen down on the job and won't be able to figure out how to get back up in four months.
