McCain Nabbed at Acorn Event

This connection that the McCain camp is trying to draw between Obama and Big Bad Acorn has got me scratching my head because even though I've tried to figure out their message, I still don't get it. Are they trying to say that registering people to vote is a bad thing? And I'm just not getting the Obama tie-in.

The beleaguered Democratic-leaning community group Acorn sends over this photograph: John McCain, in March of 2006, sitting beside Florida Rep. Kendrick Meek at an event Acorn co-sponsored in Florida.

The immigration event, which other photos show was packed with red-shirted Acorn member, was co-sponsored by the local Catholic Archdiocese, the SEIU, and other groups.

McCain, still spiting much of his party on immigration at the time, was the headliner.

Bertha Lewis, Acorn's chief organizer, said in a statement that came with the photo, “It has deeply saddened us to see Senator McCain abandon his historic support for ACORN and our efforts to support the goals of low-income Americans."

This is funny, especially since it sent out an email on this today:

The left-wing activist group, ACORN, is now under investigation for voter registration fraud in a number of battleground states. ACORN's political action committee has endorsed Barack Obama and Senator Obama himself has said, "I have been fighting alongside ACORN on issues you care about my entire career." The Obama Campaign even paid more than $800,000 to an ACORN affiliate for "get out the vote activity." And now we find out that ACORN is suspected of voter registration fraud.

But, the Obama-Biden Democrats would rather sweep these facts under the rug and use their mainstream media allies to bury this story. But we can't let that happen. We can't allow leftist groups like ACORN to steal this election.

McCain Says No Need to Fear Obama

I have to say, McCain tried, too late, to say that Obama is decent and that he needs to be respected and an Obama presidency shouldn't be feared. 

Maybe McCain should've thought about that when he adopted Palin's campaign tactics of inspiring wingnuts with her terrorist rhetoric. 

At McCain's rally, in Minnesota, a supporter said Minnesotans want to see a real fight to very loud applause.

McCain reined him in. "I admire Sen. Obama" and they all booed. 

"I want everyone to be respectful," McCain said. I don't mean to reduce your ferocity, just be respectful, he said.

Light applause. 

A supporter says: the "truth" and the "facts" about Obama need to come out. These people are wackos. They truly believe the crap they read on the Internet. They truly believe Obama is going to turn the U.S. into a socialist nation. They're truly racist and they just don't know it. 

Look at McCain's associations, compared to Obama's and you could make a bigger argument for guilt by association for McCain's peeps. 

McCain avoided taking the socialist bait. Instead he talked about taxes. 

Another supporter stands up and says he prays to Jesus to grant McCain wisdom. 

"God forbid" Obama gets elected, he said. He's going to lead this nation to socialism. I believe the time has come and the Bible tells us, he said.

 

The supporter goes on: Next week you have to tell the nation about Sen. Obama. 

A supporter asks if McCain will address ACORN in the next debate. Somehow, these wingnuts are trying to tie Obama to ACORN. McCain didn't give her the answer she wanted. 

Another supporter says "we're scared of an Obama presidency." We're concerned about someone who cohorts with people like Ayers. 

McCain: "He is a decent person and a person you don't have to be scared to be president of the U.S." People hollered. 

Another supporter says McCain has to win the election and that he has to bring up "Some of the associations that have really marred Obama's life." McCain agrees. He says Obama has lied about his associations. "We'll be talking about that more."

Lastly, a woman says she doesn't trust Obama and says outright "Obama is an Arab." McCain shakes his head and says no. Again, he says Obama is decent. 

Apparently, McCain has called for an investigation into Obama and ACORN:

WaPo: Sen. John McCain on Friday accused his rival of being connected to a group it said was conducting voter fraud, calling for federal investigations and media inquiries into the progressive group ACORN and its ties to Sen. Barack Obama.

In a conference call with reporters, McCain campaign manager Rick Davis said he is worried the election is being "stolen" in several battleground states where irregularities have been discovered in voter registrations collected by ACORN, the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now.

Obama spokesman says:

Obama-Biden spokesman Tommy Vietor dismissed the charges.

"Today's conference call was another effort by the McCain campaign to throw out false charges to 'turn the page' from the issues that matter to American families. Barack Obama strongly condemns voter registration fraud or any other breach of election law by any party or group," Vietor said. "The McCain campaign's allegations about Sen. Obama are completely transparent and false. He believes that the registration of voters at record levels is good for our democracy, and the McCain-Palin campaign's false claims are nothing more than another dishonorable, shameful attempt to divert voters' attention from the unprecedented challenges facing their families and our nation."

McCain says you don't need to be scared of an Obama presidency.
