At the Villages in Florida, a retirement compound, about 60,000 of the 70,000 residents came out to see Palin. These are older people, obviously, so they come from a different time and still have deep-rooted prejudices, which is one of the reasons they live in these communities. They have great fears because they are older and more vulnerable. They're also unable to change those long-held views at this point in their lives.
Sad to say, I got all riled up on the message board at their community newspaper, which had a story on the event. Nearly every comment was racist or stated Obama was a Muslim. It always bothers me that people can be that ignorant. But clearly racism is alive and well.
So all you college voters, and younger voters, it's up to you to make up the difference. We need you to get to the polls. I know, for the most part, it's been the younger people who've led the effort to get Obama elected. I just hope there's enough to make up for the haters. That will be a sad, sad day of reckoning if Obama loses because of racism.
