President Barack Obama's scheduled visit to Madison Wednesday will be a chance for the president and state officials to talk about how incentives in the federal stimulus bill are spurring education reforms in the state, Gov. Jim Doyle said Thursday.
Doyle is pushing bills to allow schools to use student learning to help evaluate teachers and transfer control of the Milwaukee schools to the city's mayor rather than its school board. Doyle has said those reforms could improve the state's chances of winning a portion of $4.5 billion in "Race to the Top" stimulus funds from the U.S. Department of Education. WSJ

Obama's Wisconsin Town Hall June 11

This is likely to be a healthcare reform town hall. It will be held at Green Bay Southwest High School at 12 p.m. and is likely to be live streamed at whitehouse.gov/live, cnn.com or msnbc.com. There are no more tickets available to the event.

President Barack Obama is expected to participate in a listening session during his visit to Green Bay next week, according to Rep. Steve Kagen, who represents the area in the U.S. House.

"He's already identified three topics that are the focus of his first year in office: health care, the education of our children, and energy," said Kagen, who anticipates that Obama will touch on those subjects during his visit. "Those three problems we're facing are wrapped up together with our current economic problems."

Kagen, an Appleton Democrat, said he had no further details about Obama's June 11 trip or his reason for choosing to visit Wisconsin. It will be Obama's first visit to the state since he took office.

"I would think he's coming to the heartland of America to listen to our concerns," he said. "I'm very pleased to welcome him to our neck of the woods."

Kagen, a medical doctor, hopes to hear Obama talk about his plan to expand the number of Americans who have access to health insurance and ensure that insurance companies don't discriminate against people for existing health conditions. MJS
