Obama's News Conference Sept. 10 Video

Transcript.

Fact sheet on small business tax cuts and contents of the jobs bill that republicans are blocking.

The single thing we seemed to have forgotten is there is no them, just us, and it that regard, we've let the terrorists have a piece of us:
Now, I recognize the extraordinary sensitivities around 9/11. I’ve met with families of 9/11 victims in the past. I can only imagine the continuing pain and anguish and sense of loss that they may go through. And tomorrow we as Americans are going to be joining them in prayer and remembrance. But I go back to what I said earlier: We are not at war against Islam. We are at war against terrorist organizations that have distorted Islam or falsely used the banner of Islam to engage in their destructive acts.

And we’ve got to be clear about that. We’ve got to be clear about that because if we’re going to deal with the problems that Ed Henry was talking about, if we’re going to successfully reduce the terrorist threat, then we need all the allies we can get. The folks who are most interested in a war between the United States or the West and Islam are al Qaeda. That’s what they’ve been banking on.

And fortunately, the overwhelming majority of Muslims around the world are peace-loving, are interested in the same things that you and I are interested in: How do I make sure I can get a good job? How can I make sure that my kids get a decent education? How can I make sure I’m safe? How can I improve my lot in life? And so they have rejected this violent ideology for the most part -- overwhelmingly.

And so from a national security interest, we want to be clear about who the enemy is here. It’s a handful, a tiny minority of people who are engaging in horrific acts, and have killed Muslims more than anybody else.

The other reason it’s important for us to remember that is because we’ve got millions of Muslim Americans, our fellow citizens, in this country. They’re going to school with our kids. They’re our neighbors. They’re our friends. They’re our coworkers. And when we start acting as if their religion is somehow offensive, what are we saying to them?

I’ve got Muslims who are fighting in Afghanistan in the uniform of the United States armed services. They’re out there putting their lives on the line for us. And we’ve got to make sure that we are crystal-clear for our sakes and their sakes they are Americans and we honor their service. And part of honoring their service is making sure that they understand that we don’t differentiate between them and us. It’s just us.

Obama Holds News Conference May 27

Update May 27: See the video of Obama's remarks here.

Obama will hold a news conference with the press tomorrow. The conference starts at 12:45 pm eastern time. You should be able to catch a live stream everywhere, msnbc.com, cbsnews.com and WhiteHouse.gov. It will be on regular TV as well.
Should be a good one since White House reporters have been complaining about the lack of one on one time with Obama. The so-called "liberal media" has clearly concluded that the government's response to the oil catastrophe has not been good enough. I expect that will be the main line of questioning. The Washington Post actually has five very good questions for Obama. What is clear is that the agency that oversees oil companies is corrupt.
The federal government could probably use an overhaul of all of its agencies because it's just a matter of time before the next one is exposed. It seems that government has been letting business slide for too long.
Thursday, May 28, the Obama family will head to Chicago for Memorial Day weekend.
On Friday, May 29, Obama heads to the gulf.
On Memorial Day, Obama will attend ceremonies at Lincoln National Cemetery.

Obama Holds News Conference at G20 Sept. 25

Update: Watch video of Obama's speech here.

Today, the last day of the G20 in Pittsburgh, Obama will hold a news conference at 4:40 pm eastern. It should be live streamed at cnn.com or msnbc.com. Also on Obama's agenda today is a meeting with Gordon Brown. The meeting with Brown wasn't on the original schedule, which led Brian Williams, following the lead of the British press, to suggest that Brown was snubbed by Obama. In light of today's announcement on Iran's secret nuclear plant, the two will probably be discussing Iran.
Michelle Obama will visit the Andy Warhol Museum in downtown Pittsburgh and she and other spouses will visit Pittsburgh Creative And Performing Arts School, a magnet school (politico). Watch the students prepare for the visit here.
Last night the Obamas hosted world leaders and their spouses.

This from Helene Cooper at the NYT:
At 6:15 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Obama stepped out of the Phipps Conservatory, underneath an awning to greet their first guests. Mr. Obama in a dark blue suit, Mrs. Obama in a taupe, pink and green patterned cocktail dress with straps. Pink patent leather two-inch heels. Hair pulled back in a full, bouffant faux ponytail. Long pearl necklace, pearl earrings. No stockings.

Mr. Obama: “Where’d my First Lady go?”

Mrs. Obama: “Right here,” stepping beside him, as it started to drizzle.

Mr. Obama pokes fun at the pool, whispering something to Reggie Love and Mrs. Obama, then looking at pool and saying: “We’re talking about how you guys are all waiting to write something down.”

First to arrive is an Allegheny County official who’s name your pooler didn’t get. (There’ll be a lot of that to come).

Then the mayor of Pittsburgh, Luke Ravenstahl and his wife.

Mr. Obama: “Hey Luke, sorry about those Steelers, man.”

Mr. Ravenstahl: “So am I.”

There’s a pause for a while between arrivals, and the First Couple turns to the pool for entertainment.

Mrs. Obama: “You guys are so quiet. Somebody should sing.”

Mr. Obama: “We should have music. Where’s the music?” Read the rest here

Update July 22: Watch the video here.
Obama with Fox Sports
The conference will be held at 8 p.m. eastern (the time was changed). You can catch it on your TVs or online here. The news conference announcement itself made news because it came via Twitter, as if to say, if you're not following the White House on Twitter, then you ought to be (You should also be following me on Twitter!) Here's the White House tweet:
You heard it here first: Primetime presidential news conference at the White House, Wed. 7/22 @ 9PM EDT
There's not much news out there on what Obama is going to be newsing about but I suspect it will either be health care or a surprise.

Obama Town Hall in Missouri April 29

First cabinet meeting

Update 4-29: See full video here.

The town hall will be held at 11:20 a.m. Likely live streamed at cnn.com or msnbc.com
Update 4-28: ...the President will depart the White House to travel to St. Louis, Missouri. The departure from the South Lawn is open press and the arrival at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport is open press.

After arriving in Missouri, the President will hold a town hall at Fox High School in Arnold to discuss the progress the country has made over the first 100 days and the hard work that lies ahead. He will then take questions from the audience.
Obama will hold a town hall in Missouri in the day and in the eve, from Washington, he'll be on our TVs again for his own primetime 100 day update.
President Barack Obama plans to spend part of his 100th day in office in Missouri, spokesmen for two St. Louis-area Democratic congressmen confirmed Tuesday.

Obama will come to Jefferson County on April 29 as one of several stops on his
100th day as president, according to Steve Engelhardt, a spokesman for U.S. Rep. William Lacy Clay. Jim Hubbard, a spokesman for U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan, also confirmed that Obama will visit Jefferson County, which is part of Carnahan’s district.

Neither official knew details of Obama’s other plans for the day.

The White House said Obama will hold a town hall meeting, where he will discuss the first 100 days and take questions about the administration’s agenda. No other details were released. News-Leader

Obama town hall (partial video for now, I'll post full when it's up). Obama says we're doing what we said we were going to do. He also poked a little fun at the tea baggers. I think that was the first time he has even mentioned them. He poked fun at Fox. He talked about healthcare reform and social security. He tried to connect the dots on the environment and the economy. Many people don't see the direct relationship between their pocketbook and climate change, he said. They think it's just about polar bears but it's not.

Obama Says People in Elkhart Understand But Some in Washington Don't Get it Yet

Obama did some pretty good explaining in his prime time news conference this eve.
Here is his intro (Read Obama's opening remarks here.)
He said the stimulus package will be successful: if 4 million jobs are saved or created, credit is restored, housing is stabilized and jobs grow.
He also said he'll continue to work with republicans not for short term gain but for the long haul. Obama said republicans can't start from an ideological stance that doing nothing is better. He also reminded folks (republicans) that he inherited the mess we're in.
Here's Obama's answer to Chuck Todd's question on consumer spending:
Obama said that we have to act quickly in order for this stimulus to work. In addition to the stimulus, credit needs to flow freer. He didn't offer details on the banking plan, leaving that to Timothy Geithner, who will be announcing tomorrow his plan for the banking system.
Three republicans were all that were needed to move the stimulus bill forward. Is this bad news?
Here is one of the ideological republicans that Obama was talking about tonight:
Obama also answered a question about how we'll work with Iran:

Obama Answers Stimulus Questions in Elkhart

Update: See the Elkhart video here.

Obama's answering questions about the stimulus this afternoon in a town hall style meeting at noon (eastern) in Elkhart, Indiana. If you're on Twitter, reporter Matthew Tully will be twittering at the event, else it will be at CNN.com. Tonight, Obama will be on our TVs at 8 p.m. Eastern. Tomorrow, he'll be in Fort Myers, Florida answering questions about the stimulus. Republican governor Charlie Crist will be lending Obama a hand tomorrow in Florida.
Governors like the stimulus because their budgets are strained and they're seeing their states, first hand, fall into deeper economic woes.
A shout out to Susan Collins, R-Maine, for being one of the few republicans who participated in crafting the stimulus. On the Today Show, she said the bill wouldn't be the one the republicans would craft but the bill is needed and it will make a difference. If only the rest of the republicans could be so inspired.
Also tomorrow, Timothy Geithner, treasury secretary, will unveil the second part of the plan for the banking system. A Gallup poll shows that Obama's in a good place:
Two thirds of Americans surveyed say they approve of the way the president is handling the government's attempt at an economic stimulus. Fewer than one-third say they approve of the way that Republicans in Congress are handling the problem.

This means that - with the Senate poised to approve a $827-billion bill on Tuesday and then send it to a House and Senate conference which is likely to turn out a measure that both the House and Senate will accept, with or without Republicans in the House and with only a few in the Senate - Obama may not need to ratchet up the public support he is courting today in Elkhart, tonight in a prime-time news conference and Tuesday in Fort Myers, Fla. Instead, the campaign-styled tour could simply be a way of bolstering the public support he has heading into the difficult weeks ahead. Swamp

I'll post video from Elkhart when it's up.
