As students begin their school year, President Barack Obama will deliver his second annual Back to School speech on Tuesday, September 14. The President’s Back to School Speech is an opportunity to speak directly to students across the country. Last year, President Obama encouraged students to study hard, stay in school, and take responsibility for their education.

“Every single one of you has something you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That’s the opportunity an education can provide,” President Obama said to students last year.

President Obama’s Back to School remarks will be broadcast in schools and online nationwide.

The President: Hello everyone – how’s everybody doing today? I’m here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we’ve got students tuning in from all across America, kindergarten through twelfth grade. I’m glad you all could join us today.
I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now, with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer, and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little longer this morning.
I know that feeling. When I was young, my family lived in Indonesia for a few years, and my mother didn’t have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday – at 4:30 in the morning.
Now I wasn’t too happy about getting up that early. A lot of times, I’d fall asleep right there at the kitchen table. But whenever I’d complain, my mother would just give me one of those looks and say, "This is no picnic for me either, buster."
So I know some of you are still adjusting to being back at school. But I’m here today because I have something important to discuss with you. I’m here because I want to talk with you about your education and what’s expected of all of you in this new school year.
Now I’ve given a lot of speeches about education. And I’ve talked a lot about responsibility.
I’ve talked about your teachers’ responsibility for inspiring you, and pushing you to learn.
I’ve talked about your parents’ responsibility for making sure you stay on track, and get your homework done, and don’t spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with that Xbox.
I’ve talked a lot about your government’s responsibility for setting high standards, supporting teachers and principals, and turning around schools that aren’t working where students aren’t getting the opportunities they deserve.
But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, and the best schools in the world – and none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities. Unless you show up to those schools; pay attention to those teachers; listen to your parents, grandparents and other adults; and put in the hard work it takes to succeed.
And that’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education. I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself.
Every single one of you has something you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That’s the opportunity an education can provide.
Maybe you could be a good writer – maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper – but you might not know it until you write a paper for your English class. Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor – maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone or a new medicine or vaccine – but you might not know it until you do a project for your science class. Maybe you could be a mayor or a Senator or a Supreme Court Justice, but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team.

Laura Bush urges respect for the office of presidency:

Former first lady Laura Bush is defending President Obama's decision to address the nation's school children, telling CNN Monday that it is "really important for everyone to respect the President of the United States."

"I think that there is a place for the President of the United States to talk to school children and encourage school children, and I think there are a lot of people that should do the same," she told CNN's Zain Verjee, in an interview set to air Monday on The Situation Room. "And that is encourage their own children to stay in school and to study hard and to try to achieve the dream that they have." cnn

Duncan on Face the Nation Sept. 6

Arne Duncan says that Obama wants to motivate students to do well with his back-to-school speech and if Obama accomplishes that for just one student, then all the hoopla would have been worth it. The 18-minute speech is not getting canceled. The speech will be posted tomorrow.

The wingnuts escalated their hoopla after the media turned its attention on them. Wingnuts were powdering their noses and preparing for their inevitable closeup. Wingnuts love a camera. They know exactly what to do to get attention. They're behaving like highly disruptive school children. The media needs to learn to ignore them. Seriously.

Wingnuts are always saying stupid stuff about Obama and we're getting a skewed view. The media should've reported on how many schools will be showing the speech. The media should've checked in with a teacher who planned to use the speech in the classroom. I haven't seen a single interview with one parent or one teacher who is looking forward to the speech. Not one.

The media makes It look like this country is ruled by wingnuts.

Duncan says we have an education crisis in this country. I'll say. Just look at the wingnuts and all the irrational thinking going on. Duncan says 30% of our students don't graduate from high school.

Crazy Haters Should be Treated Like Crazy Haters

As @Verucablue on Twitter said, Obama is the PRESIDENT, not the leader of Heaven's Gate. Jim Greer is an arse. No question about it. Any adult in power should not be talking about our president as if he's a cult leader or the leader of a socialist country.

Anderson Cooper doesn't realize it, but wingnuts aren't just opposing Obama's education speech.

They perceive the "indoctrination" as PART of Obama's larger socialist plot. They have it all mapped out. They've been talking about this for at least two years now on fringe sites. Every move Obama makes is an indoctrination of sorts. I've concluded that these wingnuts are simply racist.

Obama's presidency has triggered a kind hate and idiocy that I've never seen before. The racism in this country is both overt and subtle. These wingnuts in power could never be overtly racist, so they deem Obama a cult leader. It's wingnut code. On the fringe sites, where people are anonymous, they don't hold back on the overt racism. They say exactly what they mean.

This is what they believe: Obama is a black radical leader, who's going to destroy "white culture," take away guns, indocrinate the youth into socialism and put all the black people in power. Deep down, that's what these people are afraid of--black people in power. Obama's presidency is a signal to them that the world is changing and they don't like it one bit.

What really offends me is the media validation of these people, treating people like Jim Greer as if he isn't a nutjob. He's a crazy hater. Treat him like one. Don't make it seem like any point he has to make is legitimate. We live in a country with 300 million people and you'd think that lunatics rule the country. Their voices are heard above everyone else's.

Fringe sites are saying Obama's going after the children now. This back-to-school speech on Sept. 8 at 12 pm eastern, being broadcast on CSPAN, is their indoctrination, according to the racists (rightwing). They say Obama has passed a youth brigade bill (for you and me it funds the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps...). For the wingnuts, they believe the bill -- called the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act -- which encourages volunteerism, is part of Obama's socialist plot. It's strange that volunteering is such a strange notion to the rightwing. At the Hannity forum, they're really scared and useless. Some teachers are turning the speech into a teachable moment. Go figure. No one is telling teachers that they have to make their classes watch Obama's speech. But the racists think otherwise. They're having a meltdown. Malkin, Hannity, Beck, Limbaugh, the whole lot of them. They've lost it, with Beck leading the way down the nut hole. From the clips that I've seen, I'm convinced Beck's headed for a nervous breakdown. Fox needs to pull that man off the air and get him some help.

It should also be noted that conservative Newt Gingrich is also in on education reform.

Sixth grader Damon has interviewed Joe Biden, even Oprah. But during the campaign he tried to score an interview with Obama. No luck. Alas, he has landed an interview with President Obama and asks some great questions. Obama gives him some news! On Sept. 8, Obama will make a speech to young people about education. Update: the speech will be broadcast on CSPAN at 12 pm eastern. It likely will be live streamed at whitehouse.gov/live, cnn.com and msnbc.com:
