AP Wants Part of Obama Hope Poster Profits

George and Obama, the photo AP wants credit for

The AP says the ubiquitous Hope poster, created by Shepard Fairey, was based on an AP photo and now they want theirs. That's just wrong. It wasn't the AP's photo that was successful. It was Fairey's interpretation.
Swamp: It has driven the sales of hundreds of thousands of posters and stickers, with Fairey-signed copies fetching thousands of dollars on eBay.

It is based, Fairey has acknowledged, on an Associated Press photograph, taken in April 2006 by Manny Garcia at the National Press Club in Washington.

The AP is asking for credit -- and compensation.

The artist begs to differ.

And the AP provided this report.
