Inauguration Day Events Jan. 20

Can you imagine how the Obama and the Biden families slept last night? I could barely sleep. Today is the day!

This morning, the Obamas are at a prayer service at St. John's Episcopal Church and then having coffee with the Bushes.

Ceremonies begin at 11:30 am. Obama takes the oath of office at 12 noon eastern. He officially becomes president at noon even if he hasn't taken the oath at that time. The parade begins at about 2:30 pm. If you take pictures, you can share them at the official inauguration photo book.  Here's a list of places you can watch online. Here's a rundown of the day from the official inaugural planning site:
January 20, 2009

The Inaugural swearing-in ceremony marks the end of one presidential term and the beginning of the next. The swearing-in ceremony takes place on the West Front of the United States Capitol. As per the Twentieth Amendment to the United States Constitution, the term of the newly elected President begins at noon on January 20.

President-elect Obama will place his hand on the Lincoln Bible, selected specifically for this occasion, and recite the 35-word presidential oath of office as written in the United States Constitution, making him the 44th President of the United States.

Inaugural Luncheon

Following the swearing-in ceremony on the West Front of the United States Capitol, President Barack Obama, Vice President Joseph Biden, and members of their families will attend an inaugural luncheon hosted by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies. The luncheon is an inaugural tradition that dates back to President William McKinley’s first inauguration in 1897. Approximately 200 guests will join the President, Vice President and members of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies at the luncheon, which will be held in Statuary Hall. A special painting selected by the Chairman of the Inaugural Committee will serve as a backdrop for the head table. Music will be provided by the Smithsonian Chamber Players. At the luncheon, the President and Vice President will be presented with official gifts from the Congress on behalf of the American people. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies is responsible for planning the swearing-in ceremony and the inaugural luncheon honoring the President and Vice President.

Inaugural Parade

For more than two hundred years, in times of war and peace, uncertainty and prosperity; presidents, their families, and citizens from all walks of life have marked Inauguration Day by marching up Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House, united at each and every moment in common purpose and bold determination to advance the promise of America.

It’s the route walked by Thomas Jefferson in the first inaugural parade more than two centuries ago; the route bookended by the unfinished dome of the Capitol and the still-rising Washington Monument as Abraham Lincoln took office; the route millions of Americans watched John F. Kennedy travel in the new-fallen snow after he asked them to think anew with regard to serving their fellow man.

This year’s parade features over 90 groups and over 13,000 participants, floats, and vehicles. These talented groups and organizations represent the best values and traditions of our great nation—service to others, commitment to community, and faith in a brighter future. They embody the theme of this year’s Inauguration—“Renewing America’s Promise”—a proud declaration of our firm resolve as a nation to expand the dream of opportunity for every American, and reaffirm America’s standing as a beacon of hope around the world.

The Parade begins at 4th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW and continues along Pennsylvania Avenue until its conclusion at 17th Street. The president, vice president, and their families will view the parade from the presidential reviewing stand in front of the White House, on the south side of Pennsylvania Avenue. Along the route, there is a combination of public viewing and ticketed viewing. Tickets were made available to the general public and sold by the PIC. About 100 Washington DC, students were invited by the PIC to watch the inaugural parade by the White House.

DC Museums Extend Hours Inauguration Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Continuing its commitment to making this the most open and accessible inauguration in history, the Presidential Inaugural Committee [PIC] is partnering with the Smithsonian Institution on Inauguration Day. The partnership will allow some of the museums around the National Mall - the entirety of which is open to the public for the swearing-in and parade - to stay open longer and offer expanded cultural programming and visitor services on Tuesday, January 20.
Some of the offerings from the Smithsonian Intstitution museums:
Throughout the weekend leading up to the inauguration, and because of PIC support, the Smithsonian will offer an expanded range of performances, programs and exhibitions relating to the presidency. A small sample of the programs includes:

Black Men Built the Capitol

The platform where Obama will be sworn in.
UPI: When Barack Obama takes the oath of office, becoming the first African-American U.S. president, he will be standing amid stonework laid by slaves.
The former Illinois senator will also appear on Inauguration Day on the National Mall , where slaves were once held in pens before going up for auction, The Boston Globe reported Sunday.

The Globe said the 200-year-old story of slavery in the nation's capital remains beneath the surface, noting there is no memorial at the spot near the Capitol where slaves were once kept and sold in a three-story building called the Yellow House.

"Many people come down to the National Mall and never realize that they are walking on the site of the slave markets," said Jesse J. Holland, author of the recent book, "Black Men Built the Capitol."
23 more days until Obama's inauguration:
Festivities surrounding the swearing-in ceremony will commence at 10 a.m. on the west front of the U.S. Capitol and will include:

• Musical Selections: The United States Marine Band, followed by The San Francisco Boys Chorus and the San Francisco Girls Chorus
• Call to Order and Welcoming Remarks: Senator Dianne Feinstein
• Invocation: Dr. Rick Warren
• Musical Selection: Aretha Franklin
• Vice President-elect Joseph R. Biden, Jr. will be sworn into office by Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, the Honorable John Paul Stevens
• Musical Selection: John Williams, composer/arranger with Itzhak Perlman, (violin), Yo-Yo Ma (cello), Gabriela Montero (piano) and Anthony McGill (clarinet)
• President-elect Barack H. Obama will take the Oath of Office, using President Lincoln’s Inaugural Bible, administered by the Chief Justice of the United States, the Honorable John G. Roberts, Jr.
• President Obama gives his Inaugural Address
• Poem: Elizabeth Alexander
• Benediction: The Reverend Dr. Joseph E. Lowery
• The National Anthem: The United States Navy Band “Sea Chanters”

After President Obama gives his Inaugural Address, he’ll attend a luncheon in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall. The 56th Inaugural Parade will then make its way down Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House with groups traveling from all over the country to participate. Later that day, the Presidential Inaugural Committee will host ten official Inaugural Balls.

1 Million Plus Expected for Obama Inauguration

Don't get scammed buying tickets. There is only one way to get them. Many people are going without tickets, just to be there.
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration is expected to draw 1 million-plus to the capital, and already some lawmakers have stopped taking ticket requests and hotels have booked up.

Some people are bartering on Craigslist for places to stay for the Jan. 20 ceremony when the Illinois senator takes the oath of office. They are offering cash or even help with dishes for residents willing to open up their homes.

The National Park Service, which is planning for an inaugural crowd of at least 1 million, will clear more viewing space along the Pennsylvania Avenue parade route. Jumbo TV screens will line the National Mall so people can watch the inauguration and parade, park service spokesman David Barna said Thursday.

The largest crowd was 1.2 million for Lyndon Johnson:
The inauguration has been designated a National Special Security Event, giving the U.S. Secret Service the lead in coordinating all law enforcement agencies to secure the event. There are 58 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies working together.

The largest crowd ever recorded on the National Mall was for President Lyndon B. Johnson's 1965 inauguration. At the time, the park service estimated 1.2 million people descended on the area. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan's inauguration drew about 500,000 people, and President Bill Clinton's 1993 inauguration drew about 800,000 people, according to park service estimates.

A lot of requests:
Congressional offices are reporting tens of thousands of requests for the 240,000 free tickets for the inauguration ceremony. As of Thursday, the office of Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., had received 26,000 requests. Webb sent a letter Thursday to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who heads the Joint Congressional Inaugural Committee, requesting that Virginia's proximity to Washington be considered in its allotment.

Inauguration ticket sales on eBay banned.
WASHINGTON, DC - Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC), today applauded eBay/StubHub for banning the sale of inaugural swearing-in ceremony tickets on any of its websites, including eBay, StubHub and Kijiji.

"I want to thank eBay/StubHub for not allowing the sale of inaugural swearing-in ceremony tickets on any of its websites,"Senator Feinstein said. "They have led the way and I hope other Internet companies will follow."
