Republicans are very fearful people. They fear that Big Bird is a liberal (that's the real reason they want to axe Sesame Street). They fear that people can't be moral without religion. They fear that science invalidates their religion. They fear there can't be peace without military might. They fear a black president. They fear a nation that's no longer dominated by white people. They fear that the rise of other countries makes the US less exceptional (not true). Fear is their primary motivator. Via NBC:
