"We can guarantee that we are better than Metallica," the boys of Here Is There said jokingly during a sit-down interview.
After listening to this progressive rock group, you may think that joke isn't so outlandish.
Here Is There is made up of Booker T. Washington seniors Chris Gibbs on drums, Matt Totty on bass, Ryan Chilcoat on guitar, and Zach Edmondson on keyboard, guitar and vocals.
These band members and best friends all possess outstanding musicianship and a deep passion for music. In fact, their passion is closer to an obsession.
The band first formed in January 2007. Prior to the birth of Here Is There, Matt, Ryan, Chris and Zach had played in various bands that performed covers of songs by more famous artists.
"The main thing that got our band started was writing our own music," Matt said.
Each band member contributes to the songwriting.
"We almost have roles that we've grown into when it comes to the writing process," said Ryan. Chris agreed, explaining that he and Zach write the songs, Ryan brings the flavor, and Matt adds the final touch with his bass playing skills.
Since Here Is There formed, the band has performed at local music venues, and their talents are not going unnoticed. A local rap artist, PDA, saw their show at the Crush Lounge and helped them get on Z104.5 FM's "Home Groan" show, which showcases local artists.
Here Is There also performed at the 2007 Tulsa Overground Film Festival, but the band members said they are particularly excited about having the opportunity to play at the legendary Cain's Ballroom for the Satellite Battle of the Bands.
Here Is There's influences include David Bowie, The Strokes, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix and especially John Frusciante. "He is God," Chris said. "I want some kid to listen to us like the way that I listen to John Frusciante. more"
